The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology (DMOH) is an academic and service unit within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre/University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health System (SHS). DMOH at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is the largest such program in Canada, and is among the largest in North America. Comprised of about seventy senior physicians, the program is supported by outstanding institutional infrastructure, pathology, medical imaging, molecular diagnostics and clinical genomics programs and, by a wide medical and allied-health multidisciplinary team. The program supports extensive clinical, translational, and basic research initiatives including a large clinical trials program. Additionally, DMOH supports a comprehensive training program attracting both national and international fellows. The division is organized into four main service areas \xe2\x80\x93 (i) Allogeneic Blood and Marrow Transplant, (ii) Leukemia, (iii) Lymphoma, Myeloma and Auto Blood and Marrow Transplant (LMT) and (iv) Solid Tumor - with daily ambulatory clinics and approximately 120 inpatient beds where an interdisciplinary team of physicians is dedicated to inpatient care.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology seeks to identify a Physician Assistant (PA) to join our vibrant multidisciplinary team where outstanding, innovative and evidence-based oncologic care is provided to patients with cancer. The PA will be based at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and function as a vital part of a collaborative team of physicians, nurses, trainees (residents and fellows) and other allied health professionals participating in the day-to-day management of melanoma/skin oncology patients primarily in the outpatient setting.

The PA will have the opportunity to take part in quality improvement initiatives, policy or clinical pathway development, education, research, health advocacy, professional development, and leadership opportunities throughout their career. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and at an ongoing basis, and will be expected to develop their potential as a leader and teacher in DMOH.

Working under the direction of a supervising Medical Oncologist, the principal responsibilities of the PA may include but are not be limited to: conducting patient interviews and taking medical histories; performing physical examinations; management of symptoms and treatment-related adverse events; ordering and interpreting tests; providing medical orders and prescriptions; assisting with patient admission and discharge; patient counseling on their oncologic situation; and delivery of virtual medical care, including partial work from home opportunities. The PA will also have the opportunity take part in the care of patients who are receiving treatment as part of research-based clinical trials, including immunotherapy and cell therapy trials. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC
  • Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
  • Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
  • Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
  • Willingness to work with the DMOH team to develop appropriate medical directives and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs
