Position Summary:

The Physician Assistant (PA) is an integral member of a multi-disciplinary team of patient centered health care professionals providing services to individuals, families and communities at all life stages. The PA practices within a formalized structure with physician oversight, regulation, and supervision ensuring that all aspects of care provided are clinically appropriate, in alignment with their established Contract of Supervision and Practice Description; and in keeping with best practice guidelines and regional policies and procedures. The PA functions as a physician extender providing patient care under the supervision of a registered physician and in collaboration with patients, families and an inter-professional team of health professionals.



PAs in Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority may work in various regional sites including Primary Care Clinics, Acute Care and Medicine wards, the Surgery Program and in the Operating Room, and well as in the Emergency Department, Minor Treatment Area, and OutPatient Centre.



Under appropriate levels of supervision, as defined through on-going skills and competency evaluations, the PA will perform the following essential functions and duties, which include but are not limited to: taking medical histories, performing physical exams, documenting accurately and legibly in English on paper and/or electronic records, charts, documents, and forms as per the protocols of the practice setting, ordering and interpreting investigations such as laboratory and diagnostic tests, performing selected diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prescribing medications and providing patient education and counseling, developing and executing patient management plans including the transfer and follow-up to appropriate services.



PAs may also take part in quality improvement initiatives, policy development, education, research, health advocacy, professional development, mentorship and leadership opportunities



The position of Physician Assistant functions in a manner consistent with, and supports the mission, vision and values of the Interlake - Eastern Regional Health Authority.

Qualifications:



Required Certifications upon hiring:
+ ACLS, BLS, PALS
+ If at time of hire you have not successfully completed the training, you will satisfy these conditions within one year of hire;
Desirable Certification/Training include:
+ ATLS, Airway, Procedural Sedation
Regional Training required within 1 year of hiring:
+ VPP, PHIA, AMA, WHIMIS, Indigenous Cultural Awareness
Knowledge of principles of Primary Health Care and experience in the effective delivery of primary health care and primary care nursing Current knowledge and experience in the areas of Social Determinants of Health, understanding the impacts these have on sustainable behavior change and overall health outcomes Knowledge of acts or legislation that govern practice, i.e., Manitoba Public Health Act, Canadian Immunization Guide, Child and Family Services Act, Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Act and other relevant legislation Knowledge of cultural differences in human interaction and recognizes the impact of culture on the therapeutic process, and modifies professional practice accordingly Knowledge of assessment, treatment, health promotion, chronic disease management, disease screening, population health concepts, community development and quality improvement Strong knowledge and understanding of current standards of practice, code ethics and best practice guidelines Two (2) years recent medical experience an asset. Ability to respect and promote a cultural diverse population. Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team.Good organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Effective conflict resolution skills and sound clinical judgment. Ability to utilize information technology required including knowledge of Electronic Medical Record Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines. Exercise initiative and good judgement with ability to multi-task. Compliance with confidentiality requirements Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Patient service oriented, with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions, backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand. Excellent time management skills required. Excellent decision-making, problem recognition and problem-solving skills required. Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills required. Commitment to collaborative practice required. Ability to work effectively independently and under stressful conditions required. Ability to interpret and communicate appropriate policies and procedures to staff. Completes and maintains a satisfactory pre-employment security check. Satisfactory employment record.
