Reporting to the Department Manager, this position is critical to the delivery of skills based learning in the Department of Physical Therapy. This position is responsible for the inventory and maintenance of equipment used in the Department of Physical Therapy teaching labs and clinics. The position is responsible for set up and maintenance of clinical teaching spaces including the Department of Physical Therapy's Teaching Clinic. The position provides additional program support through proctoring, support of the distributed education systems, and understanding of therapeutic equipment, spaces, and learning
The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine is Canada's only free-standing faculty dedicated to rehabilitation. It offers accredited professional programs in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a substantial research and continuing education portfolio. With campuses in Edmonton, Calgary, and Camrose, the faculty serves approximately 1,000 graduate students and is a national leader in advancing rehabilitation practice and outcomes.
Approximately 50% of time will be dedicated to working as a rehabilitation assistant in
the Corbett Hall Physical Therapy Teaching Clinic. Duties include:
Maintains clinic treatment areas (equipment and space) throughout the day
Provides direct patient care by implementing therapeutic interventions as assigned
Reinforce the (student) Physical Therapist explanation and provide verbal instructions to patients regarding intervention plans
Assists (student) Physical Therapist in evaluating the effectiveness of specific interventions in relation to identified patient outcome
Maintains complete, timely and accurate electronic medical records of direct patient interventions
Contributes to the creation of a safe and effective practice environment
Manages mailroom supplies and distribution of deliveries to clinic as needed
Assists with and delivers student orientation policies and procedures as needed
Coordinates training of clinic specialized therapeutic equipment
Tracks and orders clinical and teaching supplies and equipment
Acts as a liaison for patients, student, clinical supervisors, and instructors as needed
Offers superior interpersonal skills to build/maintain community relationships, create a safe student learning environment, and accommodating access to the public
Approximately 50% of time will be spent assisting in the MScPT Program. Duties include:
Regularly inspects and maintains teaching and practice lab space, equipment, supplies, and inventories; provides moderate equipment maintenance (plinth, walker, wheelchair)
Ensures lab spaces and student practice space are tidy with equipment stored properly and with suitable sanitation products supplied
Under the direction of the Course Instructors, sets up and takes down equipment / supplies for MScPT labs
Coordinates laundry services for labs including collecting soiled laundry, arranging
laundry pick-up, and storing fresh laundry Schedules annual inspections of therapeutic modalities
Supports department adherence to asset tracking and registrations
Inspects and maintains AED for Faculty
Has a working knowledge of distributed education equipment and system, and supports delivery of distributed education
Provides guest lecturers, sessional instructors, or guests with orientation to distributed learning system and access to facilities or materials, as needed
Provides support for written exams (e.g., proctoring)
Assists with practical exam preparation and execution, including set up, take down, directing students, operating timing/recording system, or acting as a standardized patient
Has a working knowledge of University of Alberta policies and procedures, compliance to mandates, and evolving changes on campus
Physical Therapy Assistant or Rehabilitation Assistant diploma; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
At least 2 years work experience in a private physical therapy clinic (preferred) or hospital
Excellent organization and interpersonal skills
Attention to detail and performs duties with accuracy, tact, and maintains confidentiality
Knowledge of University of Alberta procedures and processes is an asset
