What does this role look like?

The CBE understands the future of work is flexible. In this role, you are eligible to participate in a flexible work program that allows you to work remotely for up to three days a week. A minimum of two days must be in the office. At certain times, you maybe be required to work in the office more then 2 days per week based on operational requirements.

Purpose


To support a CBE-wide comprehensive security program providing a secure environment for students, employees, and visitors while protecting CBE-owned assets from loss or damage. Under the direction of the Supervisor, Corporate Security, this job provides security advice and recommendations, responds to and leads investigations for security incidents, assesses security risks, develops corporate standards and procedures, assists schools and administrative units in implementation and compliance, and promotes security awareness.

Accountability

This job is accountable for:

Effectively planning and performing work in a manner that is self-directed, timely, efficient, systematic, and directed to specific outcomes; Working with the Corporate Security Manager in the execution of responsibilities focusing on crime prevention and investigation, by building CBE staff capacity; Researching and developing proactive approaches to crime prevention, to mitigate risks for the CBE. Leading, motivating and mentoring the Security Analyst, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff will-being.


Major responsibilities


Provides security best practice advice and guidance to management on security related matters. Leads or assists in investigations and reported incidents of breaches of Administrative Regulations. Advises and participates in Violence Threat Assessments. Conducts threat or vulnerability analyses to determine probable frequency, criticality, consequence, or severity of natural or man-made disasters or criminal activity on the organization's resilience and business continuity. Provides advice to school administrators and other CBE work areas on matters relating to crime and crime prevention. Daily review of video surveillance system, including reviewing footage of incidents, providing footage to authorized third parties, liaising with schools, vendors, risk advisors, and technicians regarding repairs, replacements, and new equipment. Video Surveillance system site design creation and 3rd party site design review, by considering facilities design standards, privacy considerations, school design, and traffic flows. Advises on, conducts, or participates in Physical Security Assessments. Advises school administrators and other work areas on matters relating to Police Security Clearances. Leads or assists in internal security investigations such as break and enters, vandalism, theft, etc. May be required to provide security-related information concerning employee misconduct. Ensures accurate investigation and proper documentation of all security incidents to support continual improvement of the Security Program. Reviews CBE sites using Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) protocols. Provides all aspects of supervision responsibilities, and models leadership behaviours for the Security Analyst role. Liaises with City of Calgary Departments, including but not limited to the Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA), Calgary Police Services (CPS), RCMP, and other emergency services. Acts as the CBE secondary/backup position to CEMA and deploys to the CEMA Operations Centre when required. Liaises with 3rd party contracted security services at the CBE. This includes contracted Video Surveillance Technology, Electronic Door Access and after hours security patrol organizations. Acts as the backup to the Facility Security Coordinator (FSC) position by supporting the building access control system, and issuing, replacing, and cancelling access cards. Leads the development of corporate security standards to ensure quality, adequacy, and consistency in protective programs. Maintains a current awareness of corporate security and integrity protocols in industry and other school jurisdictions. Acts as a backup for the Supervisor, Corporate Security as required. Performs other related responsibilities as assigned by the Supervisor, Corporate Security, to meet team goals and objectives.
Qualifications

Education and Experience



A Diploma in a discipline related to Criminology, Police Sciences, or similar, Certificate in Security Management 5 years of policing experience and/or experience in a corporate security program. Physical Security Professional (PSP) designation would be an asset. Certified as a threat assessment professional by a responsible organization. Advanced certification in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) or willing to obtain it. Technical knowledge of risk and cost-effective physical security strategies and systems, including barriers, hardware, lock/key, protective lighting, System Design for CCTV/VST, Access Control, Alarm Systems, Duress, and Panic Systems. Prior experience with security and special events planning, threat risk assessment, and crowd control management strategies would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered. Maintains membership in professional Corporate Security organizations (e.g ASIS)

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies



Advanced English communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to provide advice and training to others in an effective manner. Ability to represent the department and the CBE in a professional manner. Ability and success in building positive, productive relationships with co-workers, stakeholders, and representatives of external agencies. Strong interpersonal skills combined with the ability to establish rapport and work collaboratively with a broad range of people in schools and the community. Ability to be sensitive, provide guidance, and be responsive to the needs of the school system as well as to a diverse population of students, parents, staff members, peers, and management. This position has access to security detail for students that is mandated through Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and court orders, and therefore requires the highest levels of confidentiality. Ability to manage highly sensitive and difficult situations while maintaining confidentiality. Ability to work effectively in a team and personal suitability.
