Photonic Software Engineer

Kanata, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

Enablence Technologies Inc. - Ottawa, Ontario

Enablence Technologies Inc. is pioneering the future of light-based communication. As a global leader in Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) built on advanced Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) technology, we design and manufacture optical chips that power everything from AI computing and high-speed datacom to next-generation vision systems and sensing.

As we scale production and push into new frontiers, we're expanding our optical chip design and layout automation capabilities. We're looking for a curious, driven Photonic Software Engineer who thrives at the intersection of physics, computation, and innovation--someone who wants to shape how light moves through the world's most advanced systems.

What You'll Do

Develop, enhance, and automate mask layout and design tools used in photonic chip development.

Collaborate with optical and fabrication engineers to translate design concepts into manufacturable layouts.

Build scripts and frameworks in Python (NumPy, SciPy) to analyze, visualize, and optimize complex photonic structures and datasets.

Contribute to the evolution of Enablence's proprietary photonic layout software--the core of our design ecosystem.

Influence the direction of our design automation pipeline and support new optical architectures.

Who You Are

A problem solver who loves writing clean, scalable code and seeing it translate into real-world hardware.

Experienced with Git, GitHub, or GitLab for collaborative software development.

Skilled in Python for scientific or engineering workflows--especially in data processing and geometry manipulation.

Excited by the challenge of connecting software, optics, and manufacturing in one role.

Eligible to work in Canada (Canadian citizens or permanent residents preferred).

Preferred Background

Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Mathematics.

Experience in optical or photonic design, computational geometry, or simulation frameworks.

Understanding of waveguide physics and familiarity with integrated components such as AWGs, MZIs, and coherent hybrids is a plus.

Why Join Enablence

At Enablence, you'll be part of a team that's redefining how data moves--from electrons to photons. You'll work alongside world-class engineers and researchers who are passionate about building the next generation of optical technologies that power cloud computing, AI, and advanced sensing systems.

This role offers significant growth potential--whether your passion leads toward software development, chip design, or computational photonics research, your contributions will help shape the evolution of our technology and the industry itself.

Ready to build the future of photonics?
