Position Description

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.
As a Phlebotomist you will perform and be responsible for a variety of duties, both non-technical and semi-technical, relating to and including the procurement of in-patient and out-patient laboratory specimens from neonates, children, youths and adults in a family centred care environment and act in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital. They will support laboratory operations working all shifts on a rotational basis including evenings, weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Phlebotomist will work in the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) within the Specimen Management area.
The Specimen Management Division at the Hospital for Sick Children is the gateway between patients and the laboratory. Phlebotomist and Laboratory Technicians play a critical role in the procurement, processing, and analyses of samples with a high level of expertise and accuracy. As valued members of the health care team your work will assist patient care providers to determine the best treatment and management plans for patients.
Here's what you'll get to do
Collect, prepare and label of specimens.
Assume an active role in patient flow activities within the clinic area.
Perform data entry on Hospital Information Systems.
Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities and comply to departmental procedures.
Maintain specimen collection equipment.
Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies.
Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines.
Conduct orientation and training of other Phlebotomy staff as required.
Participate in special projects as assigned.
Here's what you'll need
MLA/T certification from the Ontario Society of Medical Technologists (OSMT) or equivalent.
Proficiency in safe work practices and working knowledge of the quality systems and other relevant regulatory requirements.
Demonstrated ability to be a team player with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated problem solving abilities.
Data entry skills and proficiency in the use of Hospital Information Systems.
Excellent customer service.
Ability to take initiative and be self-directed, well organized and flexible.
Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
Experience in paediatric venipuncture and capillary bloodwork preferred.
