The Pharmacy Assistant will work under the supervision of the Pharmacy Technicians & Pharmacists located at the Northwest Health Center. NOTE: Fort Vermilion is located 532 km NORTH of Grande Prairie, AB and 660 km NORTH of Edmonton, AB Core duties may include, but are not limited to: Work with Automated dispensing cabinets (Omnicell). Monitors, orders, & receive pharmacy inventory and supply according to established quotas. Participates in narcotics distribution according to established procedures. Performs routine physical cleaning & maintenance on pharmacy equipment. Communicates unit-based issues to other pharmacy staff for resolution. Participates in hospital, departmental and/or quality assurance activities to ensure standards are maintained. Maintains site-specific standards of performance, including achievement of mandatory internal certifications. Northern Allowance: In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Northern Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $6,300. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay. Travel Expense Reimbursement: Permanent and temporary employees working in excess of one (1) year whose work sites are above the 57th parallel are also eligible to receive an annual reimbursement of personal travel expenses to an annual maximum of $1,235. Eligible employees will be reimbursed for the cost of one (1) round trip, per calendar year, to any destination within Alberta. Travel must originate from a community above the 57th parallel to any destination within Alberta and cannot be carried over.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience with Windows-based computer applications. Basic knowledge of purchasing, receiving, and inventory control of pharmaceuticals to minimize outdated medications. Must be fluent in the English language (written and verbal). Excellent communication, interpersonal and time management skills. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Good organizational, problem solving and decision-making ability. Must display tact, courtesy, discretion and respect confidentiality. Must be accurate, reliable, precise, co-operative, able to demonstrate an effective service attitude, and self-motivated. Must be able to work both independently and co-operatively in a team environment. Must be able to adapt to new technologies and change workflow patterns. Familiarity with the operation of various office equipment, unit dose packaging equipment, and pharmaceutical compounding equipment. Must be in good physical condition as majority of shift involves heavy lifting, standing, crouching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, walking and standing for extended periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications:

Recent hospital pharmacy related experience and a working knowledge of Pharmacy terms and medication names. Graduate of a recognized pharmacy assistant program and/or recent hospital/retail pharmacy experience. 1+ year experience in hospital pharmacy supporting rural sites Knowledge of EPIC (Pharmacy Module) computer software. Working knowledge of Automated Dispensing Cabinets (Omnicell, Pyxis) would be an asset.
