Position Overview
The Personal Support Worker (Seasonal - Winter Response) is a key member of the winter shelter team, providing both personal care support and frontline assistance to guests accessing Out of the Cold services. This role involves direct interaction with guests of varying health and support needs, assisting with daily living activities, monitoring wellness, and contributing to a safe, warm, and compassionate shelter environment. In addition to PSW responsibilities, this seasonal position supports frontline shelter operations, including intake, safety monitoring, and emergency response during extreme cold weather.
We are seeking team members who are genuinely committed to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness. This role is best suited for those who want to make a meaningful difference, approach challenges with empathy, and are ready to engage fully in the realities of front-line shelter work.
Responsibilities:
Personal Support & Health Monitoring
Assist Guests with personal hygiene, dressing, mobility, and daily living activities.
Support the physical and emotional wellbeing of Guests, promoting dignity, safety, and respect.
Observe and report changes in health status, mental state, or care needs to the staff team.
Provide basic coaching on wound care and hygiene practices, within scope of a PSW.
Participate in the planning and follow-up of care plans, offering health-related guidance to frontline colleagues.
Front-Line Winter Shelter Duties
Greet and assist Guests during winter intake, supporting immediate needs such as warmth, meals, dry clothing, and bedding.
Conduct basic wellness checks, monitoring for signs of cold-related illness (e.g., hypothermia, frostbite).
Assist in assigning seasonal sleeping accommodations (cots, mats, resting areas).
Respond to crises or wellness concerns, coordinating with emergency services when required.
De-escalate conflict and promote a calm, respectful environment within winter shelter spaces.
Maintain accurate documentation in HIFIS, including observations, incidents, and health-related notes.
Support with light cleaning and restocking of winter supplies, ensuring cleanliness and health standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Certification as a Personal Support Worker from a recognized program.
Experience in caregiving, health support, community care, or shelter environments.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to support diverse and vulnerable populations.
Empathetic, trauma-informed, and able to remain calm in high-pressure or emergency situations.
Availability for flexible shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and weather-activated shifts.
A strong desire to serve and support vulnerable populations, demonstrating resilience, empathy, and dedication to the well-being of our Guests in all situations.
Assets

First Aid/CPR, Naloxone, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
Experience in shelter, health outreach, or emergency response settings
Requirements:
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required as a condition of employment)

Working Conditions
Environment: Fast-paced shelter setting supporting individuals experiencing homelessness during winter emergency operations. Shifts may involve exposure to cold weather during wellness checks, client support outdoors, or managing lineups at intake.
Physical Requirements: Standing or walking for extended periods, occasional lifting up to 25 lbs (supplies, cots, bedding), and de-escalation support when needed.
Emotional Demands: Work involves supporting individuals in crisis and may include exposure to challenging behaviours, mental health, substance use, and emergency situations.
Hours: Seasonal, shift-based schedule including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays to support 24/7 emergency response.
