Job Description

Summary of Position:



The Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides care for the comfort and safety of clients and helps to create a climate that promotes optimal physical, social and emotional well-being.

The PSW will assist clients in attaining and/or maintaining an optimum level of independence in group home settings. The types of group homes include; mental health, and youth services.

The PSW performs any combination of the following duties in the care of facility or private patients under the direction of Facility nursing staff:

Ability to work with behavioral clients in group home settings Personal care - full or partial assist (bathing, dressing, grooming, hair, teeth, mouth care) Covering sick calls Feeds patients who do not have swallowing difficulties when approved by nurse Transports patients using wheelchair, stretcher Transfers patients to and from bed to (stretcher, wheelchair, commode, walker) Assists patients with ambulation (cane, walker, crutch) Maintains privacy of patient and confidentiality while care is being performed Escorts patients to procedures and remains with them when required Turns and repositions patients alone or with assistance to prevent pressure sores Changes and straightens bed linens and replaces linen Runs errands, answers telephone Measures and records fluid intake and output as required Cleans and stores supplies (e.g., bedpans, urinals, restocks linen at bedside, tidies up bedside environment) Elimination needs (assistance to bathroom, commode chair, bedpan/urinal, incontinence, emptying drainage bag) Maintains skin care (perineal care) Maintain safety, security and dignity of patient Provides comfort measures to patient

Job Knowledge:



Possesses ability to perform duties as described in general summary. Has an understanding of and practices patient privacy and confidentiality; displays problem identification and conflict resolution.

Skills and Abilities:



Excellent communication skills Ability to prioritize and organize care based on changing conditions on the unit or with Client Able to perform duties as outlined in summary, Can transport objects, equipment, and Clients to various parts of the facility, including heavy but mobile equipment, some of which may weigh 100 pounds or more, which may be pushed or pulled on wheels. Must be able to stand and walk for continuous periods of time Must be able to physically respond to emergency situations in accordance with established policies and procedures such as CPR or Code White Must be able to make a movement response accurately and quickly Must be able to sit for long periods of time while observing Clients Must be able to continuously observe a Client overnight without falling asleep Must be able to hear, and to speak, read and write English fluently, French language is an asset. Understanding of infection control practices and principles Able to perform duties in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions Able to practice effective time management.

Communication



1. Reports any unusual occurrence or incident that occurs during their shift, according to policy.

2. Keeps Service Coordinator informed of Client condition changes or immediate problems in the home

3. Documents according the Facility standards as required

Professionalism:



1. Attends mandatory in-services and online meetings as required.

2.. Attends meetings (on-site and teleconference) as required

3. Works effectively with other members of the healthcare team

4. Performs effectively in stressful situations (e.g., due to changing Client acuity, census fluctuations and spontaneous reaction to situations as they arise)

5. Is willing to help others when own work is done

Education / Certification /Surveillance:



Graduated from an Ontario Ministry of University, Colleges or Private Career College Education approved PSW program Successful Completion of PSW National exam (NACC) for those graduating from a private career college Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - (CPR) Healthcare Provider Level (BCLS-HCP) that is renewed every 2 years Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification required Willing to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Police Background check as a condition of employment, with 'clear' results and renewed as required by company policy

Work Experience:



Acute care and mental health experience an asset but not required Clinical experience in a facility or group home
Job Type: Casual

Pay: $26.00-$29.00 per hour

Expected hours: 15 - 30 per week

Ability to commute/relocate:

Ottawa, ON (Ottawa): reliably commute or be willing to relocate with an employer-provided relocation package (preferred)
Willingness to travel:

100% (preferred)
Work Location: In person
