Department: Regional Dementia Care Service, Specialized Adult Rehabilitation & Transitional Service
Nickel Lodge is a 16-bed Specialized Adult Rehabilitation and Transitional Service that offers a recovery-oriented, person-centered environment for individuals experiencing mental illness and/or concurrent substance use disorders, focusing on psychiatric rehabilitation through holistic, culturally safe, and trauma-informed care. Oak Lodge, an 18-bed Specialized Dementia Care Program at Kirkwood Place, provides individualized care for patients with dementia experiencing responsive behaviours, working closely with families and community partners across Northeastern Ontario to enhance quality of life and support safe transitions. Together, Nickel and Oak Lodges emphasize dignity, personhood, and individualized support, creating compassionate care environments that help patients achieve their goals and transition to the most appropriate setting.
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent required
Personal Support Worker Certificate, HealthCare Aide Certificate or completion of minimum second (2nd) semester in a recognized nursing program required
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) Certificate required (recent within the last twelve months)
Understanding of best practices in Responsive Behaviours in Dementia required
Current Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) Certificate an asset
Educational assets:
+ UFIRST
+ Montessori Methods for Dementia
+ Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
+ Mental Health First Aid
Skills/Abilities
:
Ability to support daily routines through direct support, prompting and encouragement required
Understanding of trauma informed care principles and able to apply within all relationships and interactions
Demonstrates skills in activating and supporting individuals with serious mental illness and concurrent disorders
Excellent level of interpersonal skills required
Excellent level of written and verbal communication skills required
Ability to work as a collaborative member of the health team required
Ability to work with minimal supervision required
Ability to meet the physical demands required to provide care to acute/rehab patients required
Must be a motivated, flexible and organized individual with patience, tact and an understanding of the special needs of the elderly
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education required
Basic computer skills required
Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors
Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
Good attendance and work record required
Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
