Personal Support Worker

Job Description

We are seeking a Personal Support Worker (PSW) who will be responsible for providing support to a young adult man with a developmental disability. In consultation with the individual and his family, the PSW will be responsible for supporting the client in his day-to-day activities, with a strong focus on helping the individual train and integrate into a current employment opportunity. The involves supporting the development of skills and competencies that will assist the client to pursue and fulfill his goals and aspirations. Position details:

  • Starting date: mid-June 2023
  • Wage: $22.00/hr (industry-standard wage is set by the PDD program)
  • While the employer has a Business ID for submitting CPP and EI, it is up to the candidate on how they wish to be paid (Employee or Contract)
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are able to commit to a longer-term (6 months+) working with us.
  • This position requires travel by vehicle within South Calgary. The client lives in SW Calgary (2 separate homes), for 2 weeks at a time. As well, the client spends time learning semi-independence at an apartment, including overnight stays. The PSW is not required for overnight stays but does help with transitions.
  • 4-6 hours per day of working (negotiable) with the client from Monday to Friday. There is some flexibility on Monday and Friday in terms of the daily schedule and hours of work, and these will be negotiated on an ongoing basis to be mutually agreeable for the PSW, the client, and the family. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, the client has a job and is required to maintain a steady schedule. However this is somewhat flexible with the employer - but consistency, for both the employer and the client, is important.
Responsibilities include:
  • Helping the client learn and become proficient, within their abilities, at their job. Training should not involve DOING, but teaching and encouraging. It is important to discern when the client is unable to do something physically and when they do not WANT to do something! This is a skill to be learnt and discussed with the client.
  • Participating in activities of the client\xe2\x80\x99s interest, both in-home and in the community. Activities of special interest include: swimming, gym, comic books, superheroes, movies, video games, board and tabletop games (DnD, Heroclix, etc.).
  • Supporting the client with scheduling and accompanying to activities and appointments. This includes driving the client to/from activities and appointments (time spent driving is compensated).
  • Ongoing, honest, and transparent communication with the client and his family. As the client is high-functioning, respectful treatment is both expected for the client as well as for the PSW from the client.
  • Supporting the client with transitioning/traveling between homes in SW Calgary, and their apartment, as frequently as once per week.
  • Supporting the client with discovering new areas of interest, trying new activities, and participate in activities in the community where he can connect with others.
  • Supporting the client with developing skills for living independently, including grocery shopping, meal planning, cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
  • Some planning/preparation of mid-day meals.
  • Providing prompts for personal care. No direct personal care support is needed.
Candidate requirements:
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in an unstructured environment with little to no supervision. Demonstrated effective time management skills.
  • A Class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license, access to a safe and reliable vehicle, and appropriate insurance.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification
  • A clear criminal record and vulnerable persons check.
  • Evidence of vaccination for COVID-19
The ideal candidate:
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are able to commit to a longer-term (6 months+) working with us.
  • Is kind, patient, flexible, independent, and supportive.
  • Is fun, positive, and engaging. This may include participating in/learning about movies, video games, comic books, and tabletop games.
  • Has experience working effectively with adults with developmental disabilities, or other relevant social service experience. Some professional support/training can be provided by the client\xe2\x80\x99s sibling (social worker with experience in disability sector), as needed and requested by the PSW.
  • Has knowledge of community resources and activities for the client to access.
