The salary range for this position is:




Recruitment range: $98,387 - $122,854 maximum starting salary

is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: $141,203

salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.

An employee in this classification is excluded from the bargaining unit as defined in the Labour Relations Code.


Job Summary
Under general direction of the Director, the primary purpose of this position is to lead the department's response to at-risk behaviours i.e. situations involving personal safety or where there is a risk of liability for the university.


The position ensures that programs and support services provided to individuals that are high profile, high risk, and/or undergoing emotional distress are consistent with university policies and best practices, and that educational programs directed at the university community on crime prevention, emergency planning, response to complaints, risk assessments and related areas are relevant.


The position is expected to keep aware of changes in the university and exercise independent judgment in making recommendations for changing personal safety policies.


Summary of roles, functions and areas of focus


Evaluates, determines and responds to high risk or highly sensitive issues identified by staff or campus stakeholders that could likely result in litigation, human rights issues and/or significant reputational impact on the University. Coordinates response and/or risk assessment teams to manage critical student/employee and campus issues, and makes independent and significant decisions regarding the application of the University's At Risk Behavior Policy. Represents the department and the university at external events as an expert on personal safety matters. Promotes awareness of unit programs and services. Manages unit staff and makes decisions on selection, training, performance management, discipline and dismissal.




The manager will be on call 24/7 in rotation with the Director and other managers in the department and while on call will be responsible for personal safety or high risk issues, deciding and implementing necessary action, and representing the university in the discharge of any grievance procedure responsibilities that arise from those decisions.


Because of the expertise the manager will acquire in fulfilling these functions, participation on the management team bargaining with CUPE and/or the PEA may be required.


Job Requirements
Qualifications and experience


Bachelor's degree, preferably in social work, conflict resolution, or a related field 8 years' experience, including 2 years' supervisory experience with high risk investigations, violence risk assessments, and critical incident response in a post-secondary institution or a similar setting

Must hold a valid BC Security License
