The HCC strives to empower students to make healthier, evidence-based choices to support their growth and development, assists students in their pursuit of academic success, and promotes adoption of positive coping skills to foster greater resiliency in the pursuit of current and future

The HCC works closely with other departments across the University with the aim of ensuring students have timely access to quality medical and mental health supports.Your opportunity:Come join the Health & Counselling Team at UTM in this exciting opportunity to provide care for UTM students. The incumbent is a Registered Social Worker, or Registered Psychotherapist, with a specific focus of practice for providing counselling and short-term psychotherapy to 2SLGBTQIA+ students at UTM, as well as those who may be questioning gender identity and/or sexual identity. The purpose of this role is to provide 2SLGBTQIA+ students with the opportunity to work with a professional member who identifies as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and is experienced in working with 2SLGBTQIA+ emerging adults for mental health counselling needs and supports. Under general direction of the Lead Counsellor, the incumbent provides counselling, group counselling, and workshops in accordance with,and within, an anti-oppressive and anti-racist framework, and primarily utilizes a single-session approach to counselling sessions.In addition to supporting 2SLGBTQIA+ students, the incumbent provides life coaching, personal counselling and solution/goal-focused psychotherapy to all undergraduate and graduate students of diverse ages, identities, economic levels and cultural backgrounds who are experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties (e.g., family problems, interpersonal conflicts, anxiety, low self-esteem) using individual, couple, or group counselling methods. The incumbent must assess and refer, as appropriate, to community resources and available supports for students; act as a resource for other student service professionalsand make referrals to other areas/resources within UTM (e.g., Accessibility Services, psychiatric services, academic advising, career counselling, Academic Skills Centre), the University and the community; and participate in Orientation and other outreach programs as required. The incumbent will also participate in conducting workshops and relevant training with particular focus on programming and topics to support the mental health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQIA+ student community members. Inherent in this role are the knowledge, skills, and attitudes specific to critical thinking and decision-making, ability to analyze and assess presenting mental health concerns, and flexibility and decision-making in fluid situations with unpredictable outcomes.Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing clinical counselling and psychotherapy to individual students and/or groups of students, including distressed students in crisis, and making referrals to appropriate resources
  • Assessing the mental health of clients
  • Providing initial clinical support and/or counselling to distressed students in crisis and making referrals to appropriate resources
  • Determining if there is a life-threatening situation, risk of self-harm, or harm to others and independently applying appropriate interventions
  • Developing psychotherapeutically-appropriate materials for group counselling and intake procedures for clients
  • Resolving problems that have been referred by other specialists
  • Keeping well-informed on assessment and psychotherapeutic advances
  • Exercising extreme care to prevent serious physical or emotional injury or harm
Essential Qualifications:
  • Master\'s Degree in social work or counselling/psychotherapy and in good standing as an independent member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario; or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of clinical counselling experience, post-graduate degree training. Related experience should be in a Community Mental Health setting, and/or Outpatient Mental Health Unit where the incumbent has performed client intake/assessments, crisis counselling, brief or short-term counselling to individuals, and group therapy.
  • Experience working with 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals living with mental health issues, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, identity, social relationships, eating disorders, self-injurious behaviour, trauma, psychiatric diagnoses, difficulty family dynamics, etc.
  • Familiarity and experience with supporting individuals who are gender transitioning
  • Extensive knowledge and experience supporting the life experiences and needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ students.
  • Prior experience working with same-day or walk-in services
  • Prior experience with crisis counselling and/or management
  • Experience withthe young adult population (i.e., 17-25 year-olds) is required, including supporting youth who may be questioning their sexual and/or gender identity.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to deliver training and workshops to staff and students
  • Prior cultural competency training required
  • Prior training and focus of practice in working with individuals who have experienced trauma or have been diagnosed with PTSD
  • Good judgment and sensitivity, flexibility and resourcefulness
  • Strong counselling, communication (written and verbal), and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work within a short-term model of counselling, with prior experience with same-day counselling
  • Non-judgmental attitude
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise patience, tact, and discretion
  • Knowledge of, and ability to collaborate and liaise with, equity-seeking student and campus organizations

  • Prior experience working with post-secondary students and knowledge of university and community mental health resources
