Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY





Reporting to the Program Medical Director the Medical Staff practice within Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences ("Ontario Shores" or "Hospital") and have responsibility and accountability to the Program Medical Director, Physician-in-Chief and the Board of Directors. The Dentist will consistently support the organizational values outlined in the hospital policies and procedures and the regulations and By-Law. He or she performs the duties as assigned by the Medical Director, Physician-in-Chief or the Board of Directors. The dentist will provide effective clinical and preventative programs to meet the needs of the patients of Ontario Shores.


Duties and Responsibilities:



Ensures that the care at the Ontario Shores meets patient needs and is consistent with sound health care resource utilization practices Performs clinical duties as described in Schedule A (this schedule to be developed in collaboration with the Medical Director and reviewed annually) Performs academic duties, where applicable, in accordance with Schedule B (this schedule to be developed in collaboration with the Program Medical Director, and reviewed annually) Models excellence in interdisciplinary care at all times Obtains consultation on patients where appropriate Refers patients to other dental specialists in the community when appropriate Provides consultation when requested by Medical Staff when appropriate Prepares and completes patient records in accordance with the Hospital's policies, applicable legislation and industry and professional standards Participates in all data collection activities as required by Ontario Shores; e.g. contact sheets, RAI (Resident Assessment Instrument), etc. Examines patients, takes history, orders required laboratory tests, x-rays and other diagnostic procedures as required Provides acute and comprehensive care for patients including preventative, restorative, prosthetic, endodontic and surgical Advises patient and their families on dental health including health promotion Supervises the clinical care given by dental staff Contributes to the development and ensures compliance with the By-Law, Medical Staff Rules and Regulations and the policies of Ontario Shores ensures that ethical practice standards are compatible with those of contemporary mental health centers Practices dentistry within the limits of the Privileges that are provided monitors aberrant practices and communicates to the Program Medical Director of any attempts of Medical Staff to exceed privileges or incapacity to provide service Responsible to recognize and report patient, staff, and environment safety issues, identify and implement preventative and corrective actions, within the scope of this role.

Participates in the orientation of new members appointed to the Program Improves clinical, technical and communication skills for higher quality practice by continually Enhancing own professional development Aligns professional development to meet the program objectives, Ontario Shores' Core Values and needs of the patient population Models clinical excellence by personally practicing according to clinical standards within the scope of practice of his or her specialty or subspecialty Actively participates in all education and training mandated by the Centre, e.g. CPR, Safe Management, Code of Conduct, etc.

Performance Appraisal:



The Dentist participates actively in the annual performance appraisal process implemented by the Centre.


Team Collaboration and Development:



Works cooperatively with others in manner consistent with the Centre's mission, vision and values Participates in the Hospital-wide Fan-Out list and in emergency situations as required Serves as required on various Ontario Shores Medical staff committees or subcommittees Provides and maintains continuing education for the interdisciplinary heath team as requested by Medical Director and Administrative Director

Quality, Resources Allocation and Excellence Management:



Identifies service gaps and discrepancies in skill proficiencies for care provision Reviews how well the program activity has served the patient population in the previous year Participates in quality and risk management initiatives by conducting all necessary and appropriate activities for assessing and improving the effectiveness and efficiency of care Promotes evidence-based decision making Discloses any potential conflict of interest Assists to fulfill the mission of Ontario Shores through contribution to the strategic plan, community needs assessment, resource utilization management and quality management activities Assists in and contributes to fulfilling the goal of becoming a center of excellence in a range of academic and service delivery areas

Community Relations:



Advocates on behalf of the patients and the community served Participates in events and fund-raising to support and enhance the reputation of Ontario Shores within the general community and professional community in the service area Participates in promoting Ontario Shores vision, mission and values to the community

We are dedicated to promoting the safety and well-being of patients, employees, and visitors by raising awareness of the harmful impact of tobacco use and eliminating second-hand smoke exposure and triggers. Tobacco, cannabis, and the use of electronic cigarettes (vaping) are not to be used or visible on Ontario Shores property, including parking lots and walking paths. As such, Ontario Shores is a Tobacco-Free Organization


Qualifications Required and Preferred:



The Dentist must be registered with the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario and be a member in good standing, have experience in the specialty and subspecialty, have current CMPA coverage, and must practice medicine within the limits of the Privileges that are provided. Please note, the successful candidate must be able to work every Tuesday and Thursday to align with departmental hours.

Comprehensive and extensive knowledge and understanding of mental health policies, programs and systems, both institutional and community based Good understanding of government policies, procedures and legislation related to mental health care Excellent knowledge of community resources and dynamics Good comprehension of clinical information systems Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish solid working relationships with internal and external stakeholders Strong organizational and prioritization skills Ability to mentor and provide leadership to multidisciplinary team

Program: In coordination with Medical Director and program Dentist, to ensure the effective provision of service and care to patients; the effective coordination of resources to ensure that:

The philosophy and principles of the program are patient-focused and consistent with best practices Patients and their families are involved in treatment/rehabilitation planning and evaluation Appropriate advice and consultation are provided Accurate information is prepared, analyzed and reported The Medical Director is kept well-informed on critical and contentious issues


Financial: At the request of Medical Director, contributes information that will assist in the preparation and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets necessary to ensure ongoing functioning of the clinical program(s) and effectively utilizes resources to ensure costs are kept within the allocated budget.
Personnel: Contributes to/coordinates the education, training, evaluation of medical students/residents associated with the Program and provides feedback as required to Administrative Director regarding staff employed in programs; provides the Medical Director with relevant information to prepare human resource plans; contributes to training and professional development plans.



The impact of failing to effectively perform responsibilities will result in potentially serious reduction in quality of care. This could negatively influence patient and staff safety and well-being, increase costs, result in poor employee/employer relations, affect public confidence and expose the Centre to possible legal action.

Medical Director and Administrative Director of Program. with other staff physicians in program and those in other programs during the consultation process with interdisciplinary team with Medical Clinic
Frequently with:

Physician-in-Chief clinical staff in the Centre to ensure coordination, quality assurance/improvement, risk management and other Centre-wide initiatives community agencies and hospitals consumers and family members committee members while serving on various internal and external committees
Occasionally with:

LHIN and Ministry of Health officials health planning bodies representatives of education facilities
