Wyndham House is an organization that provides young people 16 to 25 with a spectrum of supports and services needed to overcome challenging times and difficult problems related to housing and homelessness. Wyndham House programs include two Permanent Supportive Housing Programs, an Emergency Shelter, a Housing Stability Outreach Team, an Integrated Youth Service Hub and a Care and Treatment Day Program. Wyndham House is a dynamic and growing organization committed to meeting the diverse needs of youth through creative persistence and low-barrier wraparound support. Wyndham House provides high-quality case management, housing, and clinical supports to youth with a variety of needs and complexities.

Position Summary

:

Our Peer Worker will provide support, recovery assistance and treatment remedies to homeless youth through their own lived experience of undergoing challenges in mental health conditions. A Peer Worker is a trained professional that is to provide emotional, social and practice support to Youth to therefore increase their general wellbeing, sense of empowerment and quality of life. The goal of being a Peer Work is to empower the clients to make choices related to improving their health based on self-determination.

Duties and Responsibilities:



Use your lived experiences with mental health and addiction challenges to assist clients to advocate for themselves Interact with Youth and build relationships with them through non-judgmental, respectful, professional, and welcoming communication Provide harm reduction information and supplies, including Naloxone training Connect with clients on an individual basis and be involved with facilitating groups Support the work of the Youth Advisory Committee Share up-to-date information about local substance use trends and practices with coworkers Work with other staff members with developing case management initiatives Provide support to clients with job search/employment skills development Provide community group instruction and independent living skills programming to clients Accurate and timely completion of administrative tasks such as personal expense claims Assist clients in their efforts to prevent relapse or crisis, and to respond appropriately if these do occur Participate in ongoing professional development and evaluation and attend to mandatory training

Skills and Requirements - What will you bring to Wyndham House?



Lived experience or knowledge about recovery from physical and mental health conditions*
Lived experience or knowledge of structural issues such as poverty and homelessness*
Personal knowledge of the mental health system and the ability to share this knowledge with others professionally*
Strong inter-personal skills, including the skills to be able to initiate conversation with others and ability to build good rapport Excellent communication skills including active listening and ability to engage with others in a respectful manner Positive energy and enthusiasm for engaging and motivating young people living with mental illness Understanding the importance of confidentiality, privacy and boundaries Dependable and Accountable to provide positive absenteeism Ability to follow direction, provide/receive feedback and engage in proactive problem solving Successful completion of a post-secondary education (diploma or degree) in the social/health science disciplines is considered an asset. Equivalent experience or education can be considered. Computer literacy: MS Outlook, MS Office, MS Excel
