Summary:

Under the direction of the Director of Human Resources, the Payroll Supervisor will be responsible for the management and delivery of full-cycle payroll services for all of the Fort McKay Group of Companies employees. The Payroll Supervisor will lead a team of payroll specialists and administrators to ensure compliance with Employment Standards Legislation, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and related payroll and tax regulations.

Key Focuses:

  • Provide leadership to the payroll team and oversee the day-to-day operations and effectiveness of the payroll staff.
  • Manage 5 Collective Bargaining Agreements within the payroll system and ensure the organizations is in compliance to those agreements.
  • Manage full-cycle payroll ensuring pay for employees is accurate and on-time; payroll cycles include weekly and bi-weekly pay runs across 3 legal entities.
  • Accountable for accuracy and the timeliness of remittances for payroll taxes, WCB installments, garnishments, union benefits and other dependent requirements with Fort McKay First Nation.
  • Drive process improvement and implementation of new technology to ensure the overall efficiency of the Payroll Department.
  • Coach, mentor, and supervise the payroll team, maintain a positive working relationship while ensuring that all recommendations are aligned with the company.
  • Handle staff inquiries related to payroll in a professional and timely manner.
  • Responds to questions and provide information to managers, support staff, and departments on all payroll matters.
  • Review and approve out of cycle manual payroll cheques
  • Perform annual compilation of employer costs for payroll and benefits, T4, T4 summary and related year end reporting as required.
  • Maintains awareness of current payroll legislation and coordinates policy, system and or other required changes as they develop
  • Implement new procedures as well as maintaining company standards and ensuring legislative compliance and best practices
  • Manages government remittances and provides summaries and reports
  • Provides monthly, quarterly and annual payroll deductions, remittance reports and union reporting
  • Analyzes and corrects payroll errors and issues and ensures integrity of the payroll system
  • Initiate and develop revisions to payroll procedures and processes to ensure best practices
  • Understanding of provincial and federal privacy laws, as it pertains to collection of personal information; maintain confidentiality of all payroll information.
  • Perform annual compilation of employer costs for payroll and benefits.
  • Collaborate on special projects as directed by the Senior Management or the Executive.
  • Perform any related and/or additional duties as assigned
  • Monday - Friday (40 hrs/ week)
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
  • Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation is required.
  • Completion of post-secondary education in Accounting or Business is an asset
  • A valid Class 5 License (or equivalent) is required, along with a satisfactory 3-year Drivers Abstract
  • Experience with Dayforce payroll system; a Ceridian product
  • Strong knowledge in MS Office, specifically Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • Experience in SAP by Design and/or Ceridian Dayforce HCM is considered an asset.
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of experience in payroll, accounting, or a related discipline. Experience in a unionized payroll environment is preferable
  • Excellent knowledge of payroll principles and practices.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including good oral, written communication, and listening skills
  • Strong customer service skills, with an ability to support internal and external clients.
  • Strong attention to detail with an exceptional level of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and multitask, as well as work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta Employment Standards
  • Strong aptitude for ERP and Payroll systems.
  • Familiarity with Service Canada processes and procedures
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving, and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates continuous learning through cross-training, learning new skills, and refreshing prior skills.
This is a full-time salaried position located at the Fort McKay Group of Companies Satellite office in Fort McMurray, AB
