About this role
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Payroll Clerk to join our dynamic Payroll team. This entry-level role is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to build a career in payroll, learn the intricacies of Canadian payroll legislation, and contribute to ensuring our employees are paid accurately and on time. The Payroll Clerk will work closely with the Payroll Team Lead, providing essential support across various payroll functions and assisting with the daily operations of a fast-paced payroll department.
Location: Winnipeg
Work Arrangement - Hybrid- 3 days a week from our office & 2 days working from home
Employment Type - Fixed term ( 12 months Contract)
Reporting to: Team Lead, Payroll
These are some of the key ingredients to the role:

  • Data Entry & Maintenance: Accurately input and maintain employee data in the payroll system (e.g., new hires, terminations, leave of absences).
  • Timesheet & Leave Management Support: Assist with the review and validation of employee timesheets, ensuring compliance with company policies and provincial regulations. Support the tracking and processing of various leaves (e.g., vacation, sick, personal).
  • Basic Payroll Processing Assistance: Support the preparation and processing of bi-weekly payrolls, including running preliminary reports and performing data integrity checks.
  • Payroll Inquiries: Respond to basic employee inquiries regarding pay, deductions, and general payroll processes in a timely and professional manner, escalating complex issues to senior team members. Monitoring payroll Talkdesk line and responding to voicemail inquiries from the government (Service Canada, CRA).
  • Record Keeping & Filing: Maintain organized and confidential payroll records, ensuring all documentation is complete and easily accessible for audits.
  • Reconciliation Support: Assist with basic payroll reconciliations, such as benefits deductions under the guidance of the Payroll Coordinator.
  • Year-End Support: Provide support during year-end activities, including T4 review and other year end tasks.
  • Learning & Development: Actively participate in training sessions, seek opportunities to expand payroll knowledge, and stay informed about changes in Canadian payroll legislation.
What will you bring to the table?
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Post-secondary education (diploma or certificate) in Payroll, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is a strong asset.
  • Interest in pursuing or currently working towards a Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a payroll, accounting, or administrative support role.
  • Recent graduates with relevant coursework or internships are encouraged to apply.
  • Exceptional Attention to Detail: Meticulous and accurate in data entry and review.
  • Strong Numerical Aptitude: Comfortable with calculations and data analysis.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and/or Microsoft Office Suite: Especially Google Sheets (basic to intermediate skills required).
  • Excellent Communication Skills: Clear and professional verbal and written communication.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confidentiality: Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive employee information with the utmost discretion and integrity.
  • Problem-Solving: A proactive approach to identifying and resolving discrepancies.
  • Eagerness to Learn: A strong desire to grow within the payroll profession and adapt to new systems and processes.
