About PAWS For Life:

PAWS For Life is grassroots, not-for-profit dog rescue based in Edmonton, Alberta. We are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs in need. With a focus on individual care and quality outcomes, we operate a small shelter housing up to eight dogs at a time, alongside a foster-based network.

Position Summary:

The PAWS Manager is the senior leader responsible for the overall management and operation of PAWS, including both the shelter facility and the broader rescue program. They will oversee daily operations, manage staff and volunteers, support dog intake and care, assist with vetting coordination, and play a key role in fundraising and grant writing. This is a hands-on leadership position suited for a compassionate, organized, and self-motivated individual passionate about animal rescue and welfare.

The Manager will report to the PAWS Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities:

Shelter & Program Operations

? Oversee day-to-day operations of the shelter and rescue programs

? Manage intake of dogs and ensure appropriate care, safety, and behavioral support

? Assist with coordination of veterinary care, including vaccinations, spay/neuter, and medical treatments

? Ensure high standards of cleanliness, enrichment, and welfare for all dogs in care

? Maintain accurate records for each dog (medical, behavioral, intake, and adoption)

Leadership & Staff Management

? Assist with recruitment of staff and volunteers

? Schedule, and supervise staff and volunteers

? Provide training, support, and performance feedback to ensure quality of care

? Create and manage weekly/monthly schedules for staff and volunteers

? Foster a positive, team-oriented culture aligned with PAWS values

Community Engagement & Fundraising

? Support fundraising campaigns, events, and donor relations

? Identify and apply for relevant grants in collaboration with the Board

? Manage small point of sale space

? Build community partnerships to support the rescue's mission

Administrative & Strategic Support

? Report regularly to the Board on shelter operations, challenges, and metrics

? Help implement strategic goals and policies set by the Board

? Maintain compliance with local bylaws, licensing, and reporting obligations

? Monitor and manage operational budget, with Board oversight

Qualifications:

? Prior experience in animal shelter or rescue management (preferred)

? Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills

? Knowledge of and commitment to Force Free training methods

? Comfortable with hands-on animal care and managing a small team

? Experience in fundraising, donor outreach, or grant writing (an asset)

? Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, emotionally demanding environment

? Proficiency with Google Workspace, spreadsheets, and shelter software (or willingness to learn)

? Passion for animal welfare and alignment with PAWS For Life's mission

? Pet First Aid Certification. (Training Provided)

Working Conditions:

? This is a part time (20 - 25 hours a week), on-site position

? Must be able to lift 40 lbs and handle dogs of varying sizes and temperaments

? Some evening/weekend availability may be required for events, intakes, or emergencies
