JOB SUMMARY

The Campus Security Patrol Officer II is responsible and accountable for the safety and protections of persons and property of UBC. The role patrols the campus grounds and buildings for maximum safety and security visibility towards prevention, observation and well-being for students, faculty, staff and the UBC campus.

The role plays an integral role as UBC\xe2\x80\x99s central point of contact in providing mobile response to all First Aid calls at the UBC Point Gray campus. A vital part of providing first aid will be to assess, treat and provide recommendations to students, faculty and staff within the scope of Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The position reports directly to the Campus Security Patrol Shift Supervisor and takes guidance from the First Aid Program Advisor on matters related to compliance and oversight of UBC\xe2\x80\x99s First Aid program.

WORK PERFORMED

Responds and attends to First Aid calls on UBC Vancouver Campus for students, faculty and staff to promptly provide a level of care within the scope of Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 2 mandate. This includes objectively recording reported signs and symptoms of injuries and/or exposures; transport patients to Urgent Care or an on campus clinic for non-emergencies requiring additional medical treatment; and promotion of the first aid program through outreach.

Refers injured students, faculty and staff to medical treatment if injuries are serious or beyond the scope of OFA Level 2 training.

Conducts campus security patrols on foot, bicycle, or vehicle, of all university areas and buildings to provide a safe environment for members of the university community through protection of its persons and property. Anticipates, recognizes and appraises crime risks on campus and initiates actions designed to remove or reduce such risks as appropriate. Completes written reports, letters, and memoranda, as required. Reports and handles unauthorized or suspicious activities.

Receives and responds to complaints from members of the campus community and general public; investigates and reports incidents and complaints to supervisory staff and relevant external agencies as appropriate.

Attends events, alarms, accidents, emergencies, fire and ambulance calls on University property, and attends to first aid calls as required.

Reports in writing all malfunctions and activation of various alarms, such as intrusion, personal safety, mechanical card access.

Maintains all first aid equipment and supplies, including inspection of first aid supplies (including the monthly inspection of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on Vancouver Campus), first aid rooms and first aid vehicle.

Liaises with individuals, committees, groups and other off-campus associated agencies on crime prevention and security related issues in order to establish and cultivate a positive presence with the university community.

Provides assistance, information and direction to the university community and assists other law enforcement personnel when required to do so.

Escorts or transports students, staff or faculty members to any campus locations, such as residences, parking vehicles or classrooms as required.

Conducts training sessions on security related topics.

Provides after-hours access to University buildings for authorized individuals.

Ensures that first aid and security patrol equipment, including patrol vehicles and bicycles, is in effective operating condition and advises supervisor of service requirements. May be required to perform routine maintenance on patrol vehicles or bicycles.

May be required to perform plainclothes surveillance activities.

Makes citizens arrests and holds and hands over criminal suspects to police.

Questions, challenges, and checks ID of individuals found on university property.

Conducts building and area searches in the event of bomb threats.

Effects temporary emergency repairs to campus property (for security reasons), when no VPFO Facilities personnel are available; transports and erects emergency barriers.

Acts as the communications operator when requested by Management or supervisory staff.

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification. May be required to carry out other duties within the scope of OFA Level 2 certification.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

Makes highly sensitive decisions when providing first aid services to students, faculty and staff, in addition to handling personal and confidential information; may be required to stabilize the person until emergency services arrive and wrong decisions or lack of action could result in a personal safety risk and harm to students, faculty and staff. The position also makes decisions related to perceived security risks and deals with or refers in accordance with standard security and departmental policies and procedures; inappropriate decisions may impact the security or safety of others.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under general supervision and from oral and written instructions and established procedures.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

This position does not have any supervisor responsibility.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation plus completion of BC Securities Services Act training requirements, Occupational First Aid (OFA) training, Level 2 and a valid BC Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s license or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Once hired must successfully complete departmental training program. Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position and within the OFA Level 2 mandate, having regard to your own safety and the safety of students, faculty and staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation.

Completion of BC Securities Services Act Training.

Level 2 Occupational First Aid Training

AST Certification preferred

Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver\'s License

3-5 Years security experience is required.

Strong knowledge in security and security systems.

Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to your own safety and the safety of UBC students, faculty and staff.

Be of good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity and good judgement.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally.

Strong customer service skills required to be able to handle a variety of circumstances including de-escalation and rapport building.

Must be able to work rotating shifts.
