Compensation Range

Job Summary
The incumbent will serve as a Lived Experience Coordinator (LEC) for the Boerner Lab at BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (Katelynn Boerner | BC Children's Hospital Research Institute (bcchr.ca)). The Boerner Lab conducts research related to addressing issues of equity in pediatric pain, with a specific focus on understanding and supporting the needs of gender-diverse and neurodiverse youth who live with chronic pain. The LEC is an exciting new position intended to center the lives of young people with lived experience and their families in research by coordinating a patient partner advisory board that will inform all research conducted through the Boerner Lab.
The incumbent LEC should be organized, self-motivated, creative, and committed to upholding the highest ethical standards.

Organizational Status

The LEC will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinical collaborators, trainees, staff, and patient partners to contribute to the overall success of initiatives that the Boerner Lab is leading or collaborating on.



Work PerformedManages recruitment and onboarding/orientation of new patient partners. Attends regular laboratory meetings to define strategy, goals, and scope of research projects. Responsible for communication with patient partners to share upcoming opportunities and delegate tasks, and coordination of regular patient partner advisory board meetings. Engages with community organizations whose interests overlap with the work of the Boerner Lab to develop partnerships for study recruitment, knowledge sharing, etc. Stays appraised of institutional policies related to patient partnership in research and ensures that these policies are enacted. Maintains accuracy and confidentiality of all study records and information related to lab personnel and patient partners. Adapts documents and protocols as needed to facilitate the participation of diverse patient partners. Assists with preparation of grant/funding and ethics applications for materials related to patient partnership (e.g., letters of support). Edits and proofs documents such as grant applications, academic proposals, and scientific communications. Contributes as a patient partner to projects of interest by assisting with protocol development, developing recruitment strategy and materials, data collection, and conducting co-analysis of data. Manages the development of knowledge dissemination materials (e.g., infographics, plain language summaries, videos, scientific articles, scientific posters, slide decks) and support the involvement of other patient partners in these tasks. Co-presents with Dr. Boerner or other lab members in webinars/conferences, if interested. Carries out other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of this position.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

The consequences of error in this role may affect the ability of the Boerner Lab to attain funding and perform research or impact the engagement and trust of patient partners to be involved with health research. The Boerner Lab prioritizes a supportive and collaborative approach to understanding errors, developing mitigation plans, taking accountability, and learning from mistakes. Supervision Received

The incumbent will be supervised by Dr. Boerner and the Boerner Lab Research Coordinator and will receive ad hoc supervision from other investigators/trainees leading projects that the LEC contributes to.

It is expected that the incumbent will demonstrate the ability to work independently and provide general supervision of the activities of the patient partner advisory board.



Minimum QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in child health research and patient/lived experience partnership. Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred QualificationsComputer literacy required (i.e. MSWord, Excel, Windows). Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and with members of the public. Exercises good judgment and discretion while using confidential information. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Additional skill sets that would contribute to knowledge dissemination efforts (e.g., graphic design) are an asset. High degree of motivation and enthusiasm. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. * Demonstrates a high level of independence and ownership of projects and tasks, able to troubleshoot issues and ask for support when necessary.
