Job Outline:

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is an unregulated care provider who assists the Most Responsible Nurse (MRN) with the provision of care and support of patients. The PCA, as directed, performs or assists with, including but not limited to, patients\xe2\x80\x99 activities of daily living, transferring, repositioning, lifting, and ambulating patients and may assist with patient nourishment. The PCA will respond efficiently to call bells and relay information to the appropriate healthcare professions. The PCA may assist patients who require constant care and attention who have predictable responses and/or to those patients who are medically stable and are required to attend internal and external appointments. PCAs are essential in providing continuity of care and addressing patients\xe2\x80\x99 care and safety needs in a timely manner.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a Personal Support Worker (PSW) program from an accredited College
  • Basic knowledge of established Infection Control and Occupational Health & Safety practices and knowledge of body mechanics, and safe lift and transfer practices
  • Basic knowledge of sterility and aseptic technique
  • CPR (Heartsaver or BCLS), First Aid Certificate
  • Strong decision-making skills to prioritize actions
  • Basic knowledge of how to meet patient needs and the ability to perform a range of patient care activities with the scope of the role
  • Must be able to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions within the scope of the role
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal
  • Previous experience in caring for the elderly and those with chronic complex diseases, medical conditions and
  • Ability to function collaboratively as a part of the unit team
  • Demonstrated satisfactory job performance and attendance history required
