Temporary Part-Time Support Staff, new position (September 2025 to August 2026)
The Pet Grooming Technologist plays a crucial role in supporting our Animal Care programs within Community Services. Their responsibilities encompass various laboratory activities within the Pet Grooming Lab School and supporting students in the Pet Grooming and Veterinary Assistant programs. These tasks include tracking and ordering supplies, preparing labs, and ensuring proper cleanup. Additionally, the successful candidate oversees practical lab skills assessments for students enrolled in Pet Grooming courses. Collaborating with the Chair, course faculty, and full-time grooming technologist, they prioritize pet health and safety during grooming and demonstrations, diligently adhering to all animal care and facility protocols.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work on-site scheduled as needed each term at the Doon campus located at 299 Doon Valley Dr. in Kitchener. The Pet Grooming Technologist will be scheduled late afternoon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the Fall Term for 6-8 hours per week. Future terms will be scheduled based on need and availability, but may include afternoon, evening, and/or weekends up to 24 hours per week.
Responsibilities

Laboratory preparation and pet coordination
Maintain cleanliness and organization of lab spaces, equipment, models, and kennel areas
Support student learning by ensuring a safe, hygienic, and well-prepared lab environment
Coordinate pet scheduling for grooming labs in collaboration with faculty
Ensure availability of appropriate pets and clients for all grooming sessions
Oversee client communications including waivers, medical records, and payments for grooming sessions
Student assessment
Assist faculty in evaluating student performance in lab settings in relation to program standards
Provide remedial skill support to students on referral from faculty
Test student performance following remediation and return demonstrations
Document outcomes and consult with faculty on students' ability to meet established standards
Provide reference services to students, faculty, staff, and community members
Guide users through inquiry and research processes
Deliver circulation services using the integrated library system
Coordinate media loan and booking services
Laboratory equipment and maintenance
Operate and maintain lab equipment according to manufacturer specifications
Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues
Collaborate with lab teams and other College departments
Foster positive relationships with external partners and vendors
Participate in promotional activities for prospective students
Inventory and purchasing
Support inventory management of lab equipment, supplies, and consumables
Maintain accurate records of current inventory and use
Safety and compliance
Ensure adherence to safety guidelines by faculty and students
Monitor safety of animals and learners during lab activities
Inspect and maintain lab safety equipment, including eyewash stations and first aid kits
Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for staff or student injuries or pet medical emergencies
Protocol development
Contribute to curriculum development through input on lab resources
Participate in the development and review of SOPs for lab spaces and equipment
Qualifications

Ontario secondary school diploma is required; certificate or other credentials related to pet grooming or animal care is preferred
Minimum five years of experience working as a pet groomer, grooming different breeds of dogs is required; cat grooming experience is considered an asset
Membership in the Ontario Dog Groomers Association or National Groomer Association of Canada, or a similar organization is an asset
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in working with faculty, students, and others
High-level organizational skills for planning activities in the lab
Self-motivated and creative abilities to develop and maintain the lab as a relevant dynamic learning resource for the Pet Grooming Program
Ability to work independently
This position works with animals. The successful applicant will be required to provide proof of rabies vaccination and protective titre. Maintenance of a fully vaccinated status for rabies will be required.
