Under the direction and supervision of registered nursing staff, the Personal Support Worker (PSW) provides high-quality personal care and support to residents in accordance with the Long-Term Care Act, Retirement Home standards, and Ministry of Health regulations. The PSW helps residents maintain their highest possible level of physical, emotional, social, cultural, intellectual, and spiritual well-being, as outlined in individualized care plans. The PSW promotes dignity, independence, safety, and resident-centered care at all times.
RESPONSIBILITIES1. Resident-Centered Care
The PSW ensures and promotes resident-centered care by:
Advocating for residents' rights and supporting the principles of the
Resident Bill of Rights

Demonstrating compassion, respect, and sensitivity to each resident's background, culture, spiritual beliefs, and personal preferences.
Encouraging resident independence and choice in daily activities.
Supporting meaningful engagement and social interaction to enhance quality of life.
Promoting a positive and inclusive environment among residents, families, staff, and visitors.
Participating in care conferences and communicating resident needs, concerns, or changes promptly.
2. Personal Care & Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Assisting residents with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and hygiene.
Helping residents with mobility, including safe transfers, positioning, and the use of assistive devices.
Supporting residents during mealtimes, assisting with feeding as required, and promoting a pleasant dining experience.
Observing and reporting changes in physical or cognitive status to nursing staff.
3. Health & Safety
Following infection prevention and control (IPAC) protocols at all times.
Maintaining a safe and clean environment for residents, including proper handling of equipment and adhering to safety procedures.
Using proper body mechanics and safe-lift techniques to prevent injury.
Reporting hazards, incidents, or concerns immediately as per policy.
4. Documentation & Communication
Accurately documenting care and observations in accordance with established policies and regulatory standards.
Communicating effectively and professionally with residents, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
Maintaining confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
5. Support of Daily Living & Home Environment
Assisting with light housekeeping tasks related to resident care (e.g., tidying rooms, making beds, laundry).
Supporting recreational and social programs to promote resident engagement and well-being.
Encouraging participation in meaningful activities that enhance independence and enjoyment.
6. Professionalism & Teamwork
Demonstrating a caring, supportive, and empathetic approach.
Participating in ongoing education, training, and professional development.
Supporting a collaborative team environment and contributing to a positive workplace culture.
