Durham College is seeking an experienced and motivated professional who shares our commitment to quality and student success. Professional and Part-Time Learning (PPL) requires a part-time facilitator to teach a section of the courses entitled "

Interviewing and Counselling Skills

" (SSWK 1182 or SSWK 1281) in our Social Service Worker Diploma program. This course will be delivered online.

Part-time recruitment is ongoing and is dependent on when courses are being taught and the need for faculty to teach. Part-Time Facilitators teach up to 6 hours per week. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Interviewing and Counselling Skills I (SSWK 1182) is a course in the PPL Social Service Workers Diploma Program. This course provides the students with an introduction to the basic theory and skills that are necessary for effective intentional interviewing and counselling. A micro-skills approach will be taken; students will be introduced to each of the individual communication units one at a time and have opportunities to incorporate them into practice. The focus will be on the counselling skills that comprise the basic listening sequence (BLS), an essential component in the development of a strong therapeutic alliance.



Interviewing and Counselling Skills II (SSWK 1281) is a course in the PPL Social Service Workers Diploma Program. This course is intended to build and expand upon the foundation of intentional interviewing and counselling skills introduced and practiced in Interviewing Skills I. Students will be introduced to various higher order skills as measured by the interpersonal influence continuum. In addition, students will be introduced to a variety of major theoretical perspectives on counseling, including the person-centered, cognitive behavioral and brief therapy models. Emphasis will be placed on experiential learning and students will have the opportunity to integrate theoretical concepts with their emerging counselling skills.

The responsibilities of Durham College Part-time Facilitators include, but are not limited to:

Creating a positive learning environment that accommodate students' diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles; Utilizing principles of adult education to actively engage students in the learning process; Effectively using educational technologies to support learning as well as managing and posting grades; Developing curriculum that uses appropriate strategies and tools to assess student learning; Ensuring that all course content is current and relevant; Working independently and demonstrating initiative; and Working effectively with students, the program team and a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will meet or exceed the following qualifications:

Minimum of five years of recent nursing experience that relates directly to the topic being taught; Holds a Master's degree (or higher) in Social Work, Education or a related field; Holds current registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers; Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, with the demonstrated application of adult educational principles and teaching/assessment methodologies; Experience directly related to teaching anatomy and physiology to health professionals; Superior skills in the areas of verbal and written communication, interpersonal skills, critical thinking and problem-solving; Excellent organizational and time management skills; Track record in meeting deadlines; Experienced in the use of technology to support student learning and manage grades; Self-motivated and independent worker who also functions well in a team environment; Committed to life-long learning; Understanding of the Ontario community college system.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant educational credentials and a proven track record of relevant work/teaching experience.
