Part Time Contractual Position

Mission



This Space is a "for community, by community" charitable service agency, delivering mental health support to 2SLGBTQIA+ and/or IBPOC young people (ages 12-24) on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands belonging to the Syilx Nation.

Terms of Employment



Position:

Part Time Concurrent Clinical Counsellor (hybrid - in person & virtual in the Okanagan). Max 16-20 hours/month.

The employee agrees to perform the duties and responsibilities associated with this part time counselling position.

Qualifications/Experience



This Space is "for community, by community"

A college degree, a bachelors and/or a Masters Degree in a related field (ie. diploma in counselling, addiction, Indigenous programming, BSW, MSW, Master of Counselling etc)*
Ideally 5+ years working within the mental health field. Experience working with queer and/or IBPOC young people. Advocacy and activism background/passion. Lived Experience. Able to work autonomously and independently. Experience in assessment of young people's mental health. Ability to apply harm reduction approaches to support youth and young adults.

Duties



Provide one-on-one counseling support to queer and/or IBPOC youth aged 12-24 in the Okanagan, using an anti-oppressive, trauma-informed, and culturally affirming Approach. Attend outreach events to build relationships with community partners, increase awareness of services, and support youth in accessing affirming mental health and wellness resources. Facilitate group programming, workshops, or peer support spaces that reflect the needs and interests of queer and/or IBPOC youth, centering safety, healing, and connection. Offer support during drop-in hours at This Space, helping to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for youth seeking community, resource navigation, or mental health support.
All staff will engage in supervisions with their direct supervisor Meaghan Duckett.

Responsibilities



The employee's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Carrying out the identified duties listed above in a timely and professional manner. Maintaining accurate and confidential client records in accordance with organizational policies. Abiding by This Space's Anti-Racism Policy and all policies demonstrating a commitment to anti-oppressive, inclusive, and affirming practices Actively participating in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities. Attending and supporting This Space events when available. Adhering to the organization's policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines. Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Staff will provide:

Cultural Competence and Sensitivity:

The counselor should be culturally sensitive to the experiences, identities, and challenges specific that queer and IBPOC people face at the hands of people and systems of oppression. This includes understanding the intersectionality of their identities and being aware of the cultural, historical, and systemic factors that may impact their mental health. All staff must adhere to This Space's anti-racist policy.

Affirming and Inclusive Environment

: It is essential to create a safe and affirming counseling environment where queer and/or IBPOC youth can express themselves without fear of judgment or discrimination. The counselor should use inclusive language and be open to discussions about gender identity, sexual orientation, race, and ethnicity.

Exploration and Support:

Counselors will support clients to explore and understand their identities, including their racial, ethnic, and 2SLGBTQIA+ identities if clients desire. This includes providing support and guidance as they navigate the unique challenges and discrimination they may face related to these identities. Staff should have knowledge on identities under the queer umbrella and facilitate affirming care.

Trauma-Informed Care:

Many queer and/or IBPOC young people may have experienced discrimination, harassment, or trauma related to their identities. Counselors should provide trauma-informed care, addressing the psychological, spiritual and emotional impacts of these experiences while promoting healing and resilience.

Advocacy and Resource

: Counselors should be able to connect clients with relevant resources and support networks if they wish, such as 2SLGBTQIA+ organizations, community groups, and services specific to the needs of this group. They may also serve as advocates for their clients when addressing systemic issues related to discrimination or access to services.

Employment Status



The employee's employment is

Part-Time/Contract

Employees will manage their own schedule and schedule their own sessions with clients.

Compensation



Counselling

- Employees will be compensated at a rate of $60.00 per session and/or hour.

Community Group Training/Facilitation

- For group training or facilitation requests

initiated by community partners, employees will be compensated at a rate of $150.00 per hour.

Outreach Activities

- Time and effort dedicated to outreach activities will be

compensated at a rate of $50.00 per hour.

Drop-In Support

- Employees working during drop-in hours will be compensated at a

rate of $30.00 per hour. Drop in support will be initiated on an as needed basis, and

directed/approved by This Space's supervisor.

Payment will be made monthly via direct deposit, and staff are to invoice their supervisor

every month.

Confidentiality



The employee agrees to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all client information and organizational matters, in accordance with legal and ethical standards. All staff will sign a confidentiality agreement.

Code of Ethics



The employee is expected to abide by the ethical guidelines and professional standards relevant to their counseling profession and the policies of the organization.

Informed Consent



The employee acknowledges they have been provided with the organization's policies and procedures and understands their obligations and responsibilities.
