Part Time Shift Work Term until January 3 2022 with possibility of extension This position is on a three week rotation of:

  • Three weeks of Days (Sat and Sun 7 am to 7 pm)
  • Three weeks of nights (Friday 7 pm to 7 am, Sat 7 pm to 7 am, Sunday 7 pm to 11 pm)
Hours: 24 per week $22.51 per hour, when working as a Team Lead $28,12
About Alpha House: Alpha House Society is a non-profit, charitable agency that provides safe and caring environments for individuals whose lives are affected by alcohol and other drug dependencies. Alpha House first opened in Calgary in 1981 as a place of safety for men and women who are struggling with addictions and mental health issues. Our continuum of programs in Calgary, helps connect these individuals with multiple levels of support such as outreach programs, a shelter program, a detox program, and a housing program with case management support. Services at Alpha House are delivered from a social model that respects the clients’ right to self-determination as they address the impact of alcoholism and addiction in their lives. We strive to develop relationships of trust with our clients, working on client-identified issues from withdrawal management to mental health concerns, and from treatment to housing needs. We seek to provide hope through direct service and the promotion of well-being. The Shelter is for intoxicated clients and is open 24 hours, seven days a week and clients are welcome at any time of the day or night.
Descriptions of Duties and Responsibilities: The Assistant Team Lead works as an Addiction Support Worker, providing direct client care, and in the event that the Team Lead is absent would step up and assume the Team Lead responsibilities, providing leadership and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Shelter through the performance of the following duties:
  • Interacts with clients in a caring, non-judgmental manner
  • While engaging with staff, coordinate work priorities and assignments and ensure protocols are followed and that proper documentation is completed.
  • Provides training, supervision and written evaluations of full & part time team members, casual staff and practicum students
  • Reports to the Manager on problems arising with team functioning and occurrences of a serious nature involving clients and or staff
  • Provide and exemplify education, advocacy and system navigation with other community agencies and services
  • Participates in General Staff, Shelter and Team Lead meetings, as well as program evaluation meetings
  • Using the training manual as well as Alpha House policies and procedures, train new staff and ensure they are working safe at all times
  • Assist with monthly reporting and ensure that the HMIS data is accurate and up to date
  • Responsible for staff scheduling and recording attendance and absences
  • Completes admissions and discharges of individuals who are under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
  • Treats clients with respect and dignity, interacting with them in a caring, non-judgmental manner
  • Monitors clients' safety and well-being, ensuring their withdrawal symptoms are being monitored appropriately, and getting support when needed
  • Attends to crisis situations (i.e. seizures, disagreements) focusing on defusing situations before they escalate
  • Interacts with other addiction agencies and community services including Police & EMS
  • Following established protocols, required to ensure bodily fluids are properly cleaned up and area is disinfected.

Educational Requirements:
  • Must have, or be in-progress to complete, a two year diploma program or Bachelors degree from a Public Post-Secondary Institution
  • Preference will be given to those who have studied Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, nursing, addictions or related field

Position Requirements:
  • Ideally 2 or more years front-line experience with vulnerable populations and or those with addictions
  • Previous experience directly supervising and training staff
  • An open, accepting, compassionate attitude, and the belief that all humans are equal
  • Strong problem solving, crisis management and multi-tasking abilities
  • The ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of addictions
  • Strong interpersonal and English communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Comfortable in working in an environment with the risk of exposure to bodily fluids, aggression and client behaviour that may be unpredictable
