Nature of the Position
Reporting to the Manager of Community Services and under the direction of the Parks Foreman, the Parks Maintenance worker is responsible for planning and organizing grounds projects across District parks, beach accesses, trails, playing fields, and green spaces. This role involves directing maintenance tasks and designing, installing, and maintaining playing field infrastructure systems.
Key responsibilities include recommending maintenance schedules; conditioning and preparing soils and turf; maintaining and repairing fields and related structures; and operating a variety of hand and power tools and equipment to perform daily maintenance of parks and garden areas. The role also includes inspecting playgrounds, fields, and equipment; maintaining walkways, beach accesses, and nature trails; collecting garbage; and inspecting and restocking supplies in public washrooms.
Required Competencies
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent)
Minimum of 2 years' experience in landscaping, gardening, or grounds maintenance
Valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence (or equivalent), with a clean driver's abstract
Proven ability to safely and competently operate a variety of equipment, including pick up trucks, trailering, and operating tractors, mowers, UTV's and watering equipment
Hands-on experience with the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
Physical ability to perform sustained and repetitive tasks requiring strength, endurance, and focused attention in all weather conditions
Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively and tactfully in both one-on-one and group settings
A professional, responsive, and positive work attitude and ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with others
Ability to lift, carry, push and pull heavy loads and perform other physically demanding work
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and demonstrate sound judgement and decision making
Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully one-on-one or in a group environment
Basic computer aptitude and proficient with the the Microsoft 365 suite of software
Working Conditions
This is a temporary full-time unionized position to backfill an internal trial opportunity. The duration of the role will depend on the outcome of the trial, approximately three months, with the possibility of extension, or conversion to permanent. Wage for the position is set at Grid Level 7, $33.17 - $39.86. Hours of work will be 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This successful candidate will be eligible for optional participation in a nine-day fortnight shift schedule - enjoy a long weekend every second week!
The above wages are supplemented by attractive extended benefits and pension package, and three weeks' vacation to start.
