What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

  • Assist with park operations including enforcement, maintenance and revenue collection.
  • Provide technical guidance and group leadership to park employees and the public.
  • Ensure visitor satisfaction by ensuring park facilities are operational and safe.
  • Address and resolve complaints, concerns, and suggestions.
  • Conduct administrative duties such as preparing and updating park training records, maintenance and equipment records, and maintaining inventory of park maintenance supplies.
  • Purchase Park supplies.
  • Provide general park maintenance functions which can include operating light powered equipment as well as boats, vessels and motor-powered machines.
  • Conduct routine maintenance which can include lawn mowing, painting, minor repairs/maintenance of buildings/utilities, etc.
  • Act as a duty officer in charge of the park in the absence of the Park Superintendent/Assistant Park Superintendent.

Please note this position may require the successful candidate to work variable hours, shifts, and weekends as required, perform first aid treatment and assist emergency services as required.

The successful candidate must have the ability to obtain and maintain the following Certifications and Licenses:
  • The Ontario Recreational Canoe and Kayak Association (ORCKA) Basic level II certification
  • Valid Standard First Aid certificate
  • Chain Saw Operator training
  • Pleasure Craft Operators Card (PCOC)


How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirements:

  • You must have a valid class \'G\' driver\'s licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver\'s license upon being hired.
  • You must have the ability to be designated as a Park Warden and meet the ministry certification criteria and standards in the use of force.
  • You must have the ability to work shifts, weekends and holidays as per schedule.


Park Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge of resource management principles, techniques, legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance and provide accurate visitor information.
  • You have knowledge of park administration, business practices, purchasing, accounting policies, procedures and guidelines to update park records.
  • You have knowledge of work plan procedures to track expenditures and provide input to ensure budgets are not exceeded.
  • You have arithmetic skills to accurately account for change floats, track expenditures, purchasing supplies, prepare travel claims and park inventories.


Maintenance Abilities:

  • You can operate and maintain light powered equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, motorboats, etc.
  • You can operate non-powered vessels such as canoes and kayaks.


Analytical and Organizational Skills:

  • You have analytical and judgement skills to determine urgency of matters/inquiries/processes.
  • You have analytical and organization skills to ensure own work duties are completed within established time frames.


Technical Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge of the Canada Shipping Act, small vessel regulations and Ministry marine safety policies.
  • You have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
  • You have knowledge of WHMIS and of the proper use and storage of industrial chemicals.


Customer Service, Communication and Leadership Skills:

  • You have excellent customer service and communication skills to address complaints and clarify and explain items in detail to park visors.
  • You have leadership skills to provide direction to park staff by assigning work, explaining work methods and monitoring performance.
