Job Description

The Paint - Quality Control Technician is responsible for processing formal inspections for all specific paint systems and activities at all stages of construction. The role is responsible to ensure specifications as per NACE Standard, class rules, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work instructions are implemented at each stage of construction.


The paint technician performs daily quality control inspections to identify nonconformities with contract requirements, develops corrective actions and communicates requirements to shop personnel. The paint technician will provide technical oversight and direction for structural and outfit systems. Participates in the development of technical binders and reports.


Additionally, the paint technician attends formal inspections with owners and regulatory bodies.


Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.





What you'll do



Inspect and test paint batches for color, viscosity, durability, and finish quality. Follow ITP for daily process inspection for Pre-Blast, Pre-Paint and Final paint inspection. Reviews specifications, class rules, work instructions and SOPs to determine paint quality requirements for each contract. Develops new construction and paint projects' Inspection and Test Plans for painting specific systems. Ensure plans are implemented in accordance with contract requirements. Identify defects, inconsistencies, or contamination in paint products. Produces and signs final inspection reports that are deliverable as objective quality evidence to the customer. Support continuous improvement of paint quality processes. Attend formal inspections with customers and regulatory bodies. Documents all defects, nonconformities and provides results to responsible supervisors and Customer/Class as required. Works with paint area supervisors to improve in-process quality. Performs gap analyses of procedures, work instructions and forms for painting specific systems. Communicates results to respective areas and assists in developing and modifying procedures, work instructions and forms as required. Performs periodic audits of paint specific suppliers to ensure compliance with contract requirements. Performs additional duties as assigned.

What you'll bring



Must have minimum CIP AMPP NACE level 2. Diploma in paint discipline (Marine, Mechanical Naval Architect, Electrical Engineering or Geomatics /equivalent Surveying measuring background preferred) or Red Seal Trades Certificate. 5-8 years' experience in shipyards or complex manufacturing industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, or; 5-8 years' experience as a surveyor or an equivalent combination of education and experience will be an asset. Technical understanding of NDT techniques and their application to meet contract, regulatory and statutory requirements for trade specific systems will be an asset. Prior Quality/Accuracy Control or Quality Assurance experience is desirable. Formal quality assurance certifications desirable. Understanding of the fabrication, installation, commissioning and testing of paint specific systems. Working knowledge of quality control and inspection procedures. Ability to develop Quality Plans and Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs). Technical skills include an understanding of quality techniques, their application to shipbuilding and the ability to read and interpret technical specifications and drawings. Strong Communication skills and customer service focus.

Technical writing skills.
Advanced computer skills including Outlook / Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Visio / SharePoint. Ability to multi-task, prioritize and problem solve. Good judgment and reasoning skills. Ability to work with limited direction.

The estimated salary for this position is $84,600 - $103,400. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate's skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company's sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
