The purpose of this position is to support person's suffering chronic pain who have been referred to the provincial pain management clinic by providing persons access to assessments, care planning and interventions and supporting the patients journey towards optimizing their health in dealing with pain disorders.

The Pain Clinic Nurse Practitioner (NP) will support intake of complex patients including completing comprehensive assessments and medical histories. The NP will gain a strong understanding of patients baseline to inform plan of care, treat and / or collaborate in the treatment plans and support management of a chronic pain patient caseload working in collaboration with Physicians and/or under their direction as necessary to support patient access in this specialty clinic. The NP's clinical practice will include intake of new patients which will be identified collaboratively with the Pain services specialists. In addition the NP will provide ongoing follow up assessments of established patients, applying pain service clinical measures to support the patient's status of response relative to their clinical diagnosis, support, inform and guide pain management treatment decisions to support the patient's overall function, quality of life, and the long-term outcomes of chronic pain disorders. This may also include building competencies and performing appropriate musculoskeletal procedures to improve patient outcomes. This position will include an onboarding phase during which the nurse practitioner will undertake specialized training as well as guidance and mentorship by the pain specialists to develop the necessary clinical skills and competencies, foster confidence, and autonomy required to function within the pain services clinic team.

Duties:



Perform comprehensive, focused health intake and follow up assessments of chronic pain patients as deemed appropriate by the specialist;

Analyze assessment data by systematically comparing clinical, behavioral, and diagnostic data to determine differential and working diagnosis;

Discuss with and involve the specialists and patients in therapeutic care planning and decision making and support patients in taking responsibility for their health;

Select and prescribe disease modifying medications and other therapies within the scope of practice based on current evidence, knowledge of pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, drug interactions and individual client characteristics;

Support patient education and counsel on drug therapies, side effects and interactions;

Recognize and initiate effective therapeutic interventions, consult with specialist in select client situations where indicated;

Counsel and guide patients on symptom management, health maintenance and rehabilitation medications; lifestyle changes, risk factors, and other therapies within the scope of practice based on knowledge of pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, drug interactions and individual client characteristics;

Assist patients in restoring, regaining, or maintaining functional or physiological stability and in achieving optimal function or health by using a range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.

Perform invasive and non-invasive procedures to restore, regain or maintain physiological stability of patient as required by context of practice;

Use a nursing framework, and theoretical and scientific foundations to guide clinical decisions and integrate professional, ethical and legal standards in their practice;

Demonstrate reflective practice and participate in learning experiences that enhance continued competence and professional development in their area of specialized practice;

Assist with providing clinical services for high volume clinics (e.g. low back pain)

Minimum Qualifications:



Active or eligible for registration with the College of Registered Nurses & Midwives of PEI;

Considerable nursing and nurse practitioner experience is required;

Demonstrated ability to learn progressively new complex clinical competencies and/or willing to learn;

Must have aptitude and desire to learn standards of care for chronic pain, complex treatments, interventions and medication regimens;

Current BCLS is required and must have good previous work and attendance record;

The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory criminal record check prior to beginning employment

Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills

Other Qualifications:



Current knowledge of complex chronic pain disorders, complex chronic diseases and medical management is an asset;

Evidence of professional development in management of complex chronic diseases preferred;

Previous experience in patient counseling, case management and care coordination an asset.

Preference will be given to applicants with internal medicine experience;

Available to begin practice within the provincial pain clinic as soon as possible.

External candidates may be eligible to receive a $8,000 or $18,000 Nurse Practitioner Incentive, plus a $5,000 Rural or $8,000 Student Loan Incentive depending on location of employment. To be eligible for recruitment incentives candidates must hold a 1.0 FTE, this can be a full-time role or a combination of part-time positions. Relocation Assistance may be available to part or full-time candidates

Salary Range:

$57.94 - $65.59 per hour (Grade 20)

Bi-Weekly Hours:

75 hours Bi-weekly / Mon - Fri
