Set up any or all types of packaging machines in department for efficient and safe operation, change-over and maintenance during operation.
In addition to set up and line maintenance functions, may be assigned specific packaging line(s) and be responsible for mechanical elements of line reliability of assigned line(s).
Provide technical expertise and support in the completion of equipment set-up procedures, set-up mechanics training, equipment troubleshooting and repair to ensure a minimum of equipment downtime.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
Know, understand, and follow cGMP\xe2\x80\x99s and departmental and safety standard operating procedures.
Set-up and/or change over any or all packaging equipment, using knowledge of all machines and equipment. Change over equipment in accordance with product changes. Disassemble machines as required to remove parts; replace with correct machine parts and reassemble. Setup machines by making necessary adjustments with a variety of tools. Check setup or change over by test operation. Report maintenance required to supervisor.
Maintain machines during run by correcting mechanical failures, including preventing or clearing jams, making tuning adjustments, checking materials, trouble shooting and installing new parts, or repairing parts as required. May be required to improvise temporary repairs to enable equipment to continue operation until it is convenient to carry out proper maintenance.
Remedy electrical difficulty where adjustment is mechanical; such as resetting switches and adjusting electronic sensors. Use measuring instruments, e.g. Micrometers, Pyrometers, Vernier\xe2\x80\x99s. Test operation after correcting. Prepare machines for operation before start up and after shut downs as required. Fill glue reservoirs, check adjustments, and make other necessary preparations. May prepare glue for machine operator during operation. Return all change over parts to their proper storage location. Check all parts before storage for defects and cleanliness; report maintenance required to supervisor. Enter maintenance work orders into J.D. Edwards as required.
Trouble shoots all packaging equipment, adjust and correct in order to obtain optimum performance. He/she will share responsibility for production of a line.
Lubricate and make preventative maintenance checks on packaging equipment. Must be able to understand and frequently refer to equipment manuals, working drawings, etc.
After set up, change over and downtime, leave all machines and equipment clean and in good operating condition. May perform some maintenance work as directed by maintenance supervisor in order to repair and make parts or improve equipment.
Assist in the development of packaging set-up instructions and changeover techniques to improve productivity, reduce downtime and eliminate pre-run packaging line tests.
Providing direct technical support to the line operations staff through effective and timely equipment troubleshooting and corrective action.
Provide training and technical expertise to the line set-up mechanics to support continuous change over reduction initiatives.
Provide input and technical support for modifications to packaging equipment, change parts, etc. to support new product introductions or packaging changes. Involvement to begin at the conception stage of any project.
Ensure that any equipment modifications, or new equipment installations are added to the existing lubrication and preventative maintenance database.
Working knowledge of PLC and electrical controls and related software (RSLogix, RSLinx, TI Software, Omron Software, DirectSoft 32, etc.).
Working knowledge of PC and CAD software (i.e. Microsoft Office, AutoCAd, Inventor, etc.
Performs and documents on going preventative maintenance schedule on assigned equipment under direction of Maintenance Manager.
Responsible for line efficiency of assigned line(s). Must be prepared to suggest modifications and improvements to maintain or improve line efficiencies. Once these modifications have been approved by Mechanical/Engineering Department to follow up and implement.
Responsible to ensure required repairs on assigned lines have been performed.
Work with Maintenance Mechanic in performance of his duties, or work with other Set up/Packaging Operators to facilitate break relief and other duties when required.
Maintain order and cleanliness in those areas of his/her responsibility.
Shift work is required.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Grade 12. Post-Secondary in a mechanical or electrical field would be considered as asset.
Experience as a Set-Up Operator/Mechanic or equivalent for 5-7 years and has proven knowledge of packaging equipment necessary to perform the Packaging Mechanic functions. The ability to communicate with superiors and fellow employees is an important aspect of the job.
