Job Description


The Teaching and Learning Centre is seeking an Instructional Designer to work with instructors and staff in the design, development, and delivery of credit-bearing courses at the University of Prince Edward Island. The position has support responsibilities as well as training/outreach roles to build effective instructional design capacity across the University.Reporting to the Manager of the Teaching and Learning Centre, Instructional Designers work with UPEI course instructors (full-time faculty, part-time faculty, sessional instructors, lab instructors, clinical nursing instructors, practicum advisors, and other instructional staff) to support the design, development, and delivery of excellent academic credit courses offered at the University of Prince Edward Island. The Instructional Designer will utilize their pedagogical, technical and interpersonal knowledge and experiences to ensure that course designs, activities, and assessments embody UPEI's vision of excellence regardless of course delivery format.The successful candidate will have the right blend of pedagogical knowledge, technical knowledge, educational experience and people skills required to provide excellent instructional design support to UPEI faculty and staff.RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze curricular needs and assist instructors, Instructional multimedia specialists and subject matter experts in the design of excellent, engaging learning experiences, course content, instructional materials and assessments tailored to the needs and context of that course
  • Provide guidance and support to instructors on best practices in curriculum delivery and instructional design
  • Provide consultation and support to faculty and staff in the ongoing development of new programs and the redesign of existing courses/programs
  • Create guidelines, training tools and learning resources to support instructors or subject matter experts in designing classroom-based, online and/or hybrid courses
  • Identify resources and teaching tools that may be incorporated in course delivery
  • Plan/Create and conduct workshops for instructors where they can develop new instructional skills and practices, (re)design and refine assessments, or learn to effectively utilize educational technologies
  • Work with colleagues to manage UPEI's Learning Management Systems
  • Assist colleagues with using learning and data analytics for a variety of purposes
  • Participate in strategic discussions and committees related to teaching and learning at UPEI
  • Keep up to date with teaching and learning developments, technology and broader issues that affect instructional design practices to support the delivery of excellent and accessible learning experiences for all UPEI learners
  • Act ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, or an area related to instructional design or adult education. A master's degree is preferred
  • A minimum of three years' experience working in an instructional design environment, preferably within a university or college setting
  • A proven track record of supporting faculty and staff in developing course materials that provide effective student learning experiences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design principles, learning theories and adult education support, assessment strategies, and curriculum development best practices
  • Experience providing instructor support for a learning management system and other educational technologies
  • Experience incorporating Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy as educational frameworks, into course design would be an asset
  • Ability to conduct training and provide support to instructors face-to-face and at a distance
  • Competency with, M365 Apps, and eLearning authoring software packages such as Articulate Storyline is an asset
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communications skills
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Awareness of and experience with social media technologies
  • Proficient in learning new tools and technologies
  • Comfortable working in a digital environment and committed to using technology to create exceptional student learning experiences
  • Familiarity with pedagogies, approaches, frameworks, and technologies across the various course delivery formats used in UPEI credit courses would be considered an asset
