St. Matt's House is a place of hope where families, children and individuals most in need receive help to improve their lives and to increase their capacity to participate in the community.
The Overnight Drop-In Worker reports to the Manager on a day-to-day basis and is responsible for advancing the health and well-being of the people St. Matt's serves and provides ongoing social support services, crisis intervention and friendly visiting for Individuals living in poverty. The Overnight Drop-In Worker must work with other local service agencies to ensure that individuals are able to find and access the overnight drop-in program
The Overnight Drop-In Worker will provide a safe, warm overnight space for individuals living in poverty who will need a place to get warm overnight. The service is primarily focused on male or male-identified people who are unsheltered and need a place to temporarily relieve themselves from the cold. All duties are performed with a multidisciplinary and multiagency team approach.
*Please note that this position works rotating shifts overnight - 10:00pm to 8:00am. Contract end date: March 31, 2026.
Duties and Responsibilities
It is the responsibility of the Overnight Drop-In Worker to support individuals living unsheltered to promote the achievement of optimal health and well-being among adults experiencing homelessness and living in the community through such activities as:
One on one contact with emphasis on individuals living in at-risk conditions.
Provide a comfortable, inclusive and welcoming environment
Support individuals by providing access to a safe, warm space
Assist clients with calling or accessing emergency shelters upon request
Advocate on behalf of clients and/or support them to advocate for themselves
Collaborate and coordinate services with community agencies, hospitals, etc.
Connect clients to consultations with mental health professionals
Light cleaning duties as required
Other duties as required
Skills / Knowledge / Experience
A minimum of 2 years of experience working in a community service based non-profit
organization with experience working out in the community
Diploma in social work, social services or related fields, or specific training in counseling and specific Mental Health Training
Experience in psychiatric/mental health services and other community programs
Knowledge of community resources and services, social and environmental determinants of health, health promotion, disease prevention, curative, rehabilitative, and supportive services
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to interact with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Completion of a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Check within 6 months prior to employment start date.
Valid Certificate - Standard First Aid with Level C CPR
Non-violent crisis intervention training is an asset
Fluent in at least one other language is an asset

Access to reliable transportation to work on site
Overnight Drop-In clients may become heightened, which may result in a frustrating work environment
There are no extenuating physical requirements for the job. The ability to lift 4.5 kg (10 lbs.) is required.
