Responsible for providing assistance and support to adults living with mental illness in a high support residence. This Overnight position works two (2) overnight shifts a week - Wednesday and Thursday nights - eight hours and fifteen minutes (8.25 hours) per shift inclusive of shift change. As part of a staff team, the position is responsible for demonstrating appropriate professional boundaries with residents, staff and community partners and adhering to established routines and protocols of the program.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Providing service in accordance to House of Compassion's policies and procedures.
Ensuring the safety of all clients at all times, including emergency, security, fire and general health and safety practices, and coordinating emergency response and follow up as required.
Developing and maintaining a positive, friendly and respectful relationship with all residents and staff; supporting and sustaining a safe and welcoming living environment.
Providing informal support and counseling to residents.
Identifying, intervening, and effectively mitigating crisis and conflict situations.
Monitoring and coordinating timely follow-up on all resident and house issues.
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of community resources and supports.
Monitoring the building and escorting trespassers from the property.
Completing the prescribed schedule of responsibilities on each shift, including administrative and documentation requirements.
Ongoing cleaning and sanitation of kitchen and common spaces.
Clean and keep in order the offices and all work areas.
Participate in staff meetings as required.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications & Skills
Completion of post-secondary education minimally with a college diploma in social services or in a related field.
Minimum of one year of practical experience in a residential setting in mental health, addiction, or a related field, working directly with individuals with mental health issues in addition to other multiple systemic barriers.
Enthusiasm and energy for creating a supportive environment for people who live with mental health issues and may face additional barriers.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to facilitate effective communication.
Excellent conflict resolution and crisis prevention/intervention skills, sound judgment, and strong negotiation skills.
Ability to facilitate peer support between residents.
Committed to and understanding of anti-oppression practices.
Demonstrated strong ability to work independently.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Computer literacy and proficiency with MS Office Suite.
Current training in CPI, First Aid, CPR, and WHIMIS is an asset.
Criminal Reference Check will be required once a conditional offer of employment has been made.
Job Location & Working Conditions
This position is based at House of Compassion which is located at 169-171 Shaw Street, Toronto (entrance at 169 Shaw Street). The program operates in a low rise 21 bedroom house, with shared bathrooms and congregate living spaces. The building is smoke-free and there may be exposure to second hand smoke in exterior areas on the property.
House of Compassion provides high support housing to adults who are living with severe and persistent mental illness and, as such, you will have interactions with residents who are experiencing distress or illness. Some heavy lifting (over 20 lbs) is required for this position, as well being physically able to manage stairs and be mobile on feet for the majority of your shift.
