Job Description

L'Arche is an organization for people with and without intellectual disabilities. We live, work, and learn together in our 30 communities across Canada. Founded in 1964, L'Arche strives to shape a more human society where each person's gifts are known and celebrated.


We currently have five L'Arche houses in Toronto where people with and without disabilities live together. We also run 3 programs for adults with disabilities: Sol Express, Trying It On For Size (TIFS) and an internal Daytime Program. We have a main office, the Gathering Place, located in East York where our administration team works and community gatherings happen. Simpson House is located at Broadview Ave. and Gerrard St. E.


L'Arche Toronto is seeking a self-driven, compassionate individual who is willing to be with and work alongside individuals with and without developmental disabilities in an overnight home setting. Successful applicants will be self-motivated, effective communicators, critical thinkers and independent problem solvers.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

On arrival, read the communication book to obtain relevant information about core member well-being and check in with members of the house team regarding updates and issues that may arise in the night. Throughout the night, be attentive to all core members in the home and provide support, as needed. Consistently follow, where appropriate, Behavioral and Crisis Protocols as documented. Ensure the completion of all documentation in a timely and competent way, including nightly checklists, behavioural/medical documentation, reporting forms, etc. Ability to work independently and with discretion while those in the home sleep. Ability to respond in a crisis and problem solve effectively in the event of an emergency. Write a summary of how the night went. Record instances when any core members were awake or unwell in the overnight communication book. Record necessary behavioural and medical documentation. Administer medication as prescribed by a physician and adhering to all community practices regarding medication administration. Support core members with dignity and respect while following personal care routines. Complete daily housekeeping chores to ensure that the home is safe, clean, well-managed and welcoming to all. This includes cleaning, cooking, laundry, minor repairs, etc. Support core members as overnight support in hospital, as needed. Ensure effective communication and collaboration with team members, being open to giving and receiving feedback and being willing to resolve any tensions and conflicts which may arise, according to the community process re: conflict resolution. Support and respect the schedule, priorities, routines and traditions of the home as outlined by the House Leader. Maintain up-to-date training requirements, as requested by the Assistants Coordinator/HR or delegate. Understand and adhere to all L'Arche community standards, policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

An educational background in Developmental Services (DSW), Social Services (SSW), or Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and/or 2+ years of experience in the Developmental Services Sector (is an asset). A valid G driver's license with 3 or more years of driving experience (is an asset). First Aid and CPR level C with AED Police Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) Understanding or experience with the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and/or Proloquo2Go application an asset.

Flexibility:

The hours spent in the house are based on the needs of the home and will be scheduled by the House Manager, in advance. * The Awake Overnight Assistant may be asked to change homes and scheduled hours if a need develops within the community.
