About the Position:
Reporting to the Senior Camp Counsellor on a day-to-day basis, the Outreach Education Assistant will support summer camp staff in leading groups of youth (ages six to 14) through fun, educational, safe and inclusive experiences at BC SPCA summer day camps. Sessions will be held at a designated BC SPCA location. Using age-appropriate material developed by the BC SPCA Humane Education Team, learning will include animal care and welfare topics related to companion/farm/wild animals and the environment. Additionally, the candidate will support BC SPCA Animal Centre staff by performing a variety of shelter duties and tasks.
Some specific duties:
\xc2\xb7 Support summer camp staff in leading campers in approved activities at designated BC SPCA camp location.
\xc2\xa7 Camp Counsellors may also facilitate virtual camps, leading approved activities using the BC SPCA\'s virtual meeting software.
\xc2\xb7 Ensure the safety of all campers.
\xc2\xa7 Ensure the proper health and safety protocols at BC SPCA camp space are followed.
\xc2\xa7 Identify potential safety hazards in advance and take quick action to prevent/deal with any safety concerns as they arise.
\xc2\xa7 Provide suggestions to supervisor to improve safety.
\xc2\xa7 Administer first aid as required.
\xc2\xa7 Complete incident reports if required.
\xc2\xb7 Provide a fun and inclusive environment for youth.
\xc2\xa7 Build relationships with participants.
\xc2\xa7 Communicate compassionately and respectfully with campers at an age-appropriate level, and in a way that creates a safe and equitable learning environment.
\xc2\xa7 Be respectful, curious, and knowledgeable about diversity and wherever possible, work with participants to ensure they acknowledge/appreciate this in other participants as well.
\xc2\xa7 Be flexible and prepared to adapt support for participants with unique behavioural, learning and/or other needs.
\xc2\xa7 Work with Senior Camp Counsellor to implement strategies and solutions to create a successful experience for participants.
\xc2\xa7 Work with Senior Camp Counsellor and/or other team members to provide one-on-one support to participants when required.
\xc2\xa7 Look for ways to encourage interaction in a variety of ways in educational activities.
\xc2\xb7 Maintain a clean and organized activity space.
\xc2\xb7 Develop a basic understanding of animal stress signals and monitor shelter animals for signs of stress.
\xc2\xb7 Develop a general understanding of the BC SPCA position statements on animal welfare and companion animal care.
\xc2\xb7 Provide program feedback to the Regional Humane Educator.
\xc2\xb7 Participate as requested in the development of fun, educational and inclusive programs for campers.
\xc2\xb7 May be required to participate in the creation of fun, educational and inclusive online videos for virtual campers using BC SPCA equipment and software.
\xc2\xb7 Monitor camper interactions; address any questions/issues that arise.
\xc2\xb7 Communication with parents/guardians of campers may be required.
\xc2\xb7 Shelter duties as required (may include, but not limited to, supporting reception, cleaning animal enclosures, answering phones).
Qualifications you need to have:
\xc2\xb7 High School Diploma or equivalent.
\xc2\xb7 Energetic and enthusiastic, patient, positive and hardworking, with a passion for making a difference.
\xc2\xb7 Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team, with a teachable spirit.
\xc2\xb7 Is aware of and exhibits leadership qualities and instincts.
\xc2\xb7 Ability to communicate to a diverse audience and resolve conflict in a constructive and professional manner.
\xc2\xb7 Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs, push, pull and participate in outdoor field games.
\xc2\xb7 Excellent organizational and time management skills.
\xc2\xb7 Must be willing to complete a criminal record with vulnerable sector check.
\xc2\xb7 Assets include: experience working with children of diverse learning and behavioural needs; experience with animals; familiarity with creating digital content.
\xc2\xb7 Commitment to principles of equity, diversity and reconciliation.
\xc2\xb7 Philosophical harmony with the mission, vision and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.
