Outdoor Education Facilitator
12 Week Contract Position
The Kentville Parks and Recreation Department provides top quality recreational programs and

What is Outdoor Education?
Outdoor education is an experiential learning approach that immerses participants in natural
environments to foster personal growth, environmental stewardship, and physical literacy. By
engaging in hands-on activities, exploration, and teamwork, outdoor education encourages a
deeper connection to the natural world, enhances problem-solving and resilience, and promotes
overall well-being. This educational method emphasizes the value of play, adventure, and
discovery in outdoor settings while instilling respect for the environment and sustainable
practices.
Your Opportunity:
The Town of Kentville Department of Parks Recreation is seeking candidates to fill the following
facilitator position:
Outdoor Education Facilitator
Reporting to the Active Living Community Coordinator, the Outdoor Education Facilitator will
play a pivotal role in delivering innovative outdoor programs for people of all ages and abilities.
Collaborating closely with the Active Transportation Facilitator, you will work together to design
and implement complementary work plans, leveraging each other's capacity, time, and
expertise to achieve meaningful, community-driven outcomes. Your leadership will inspire
participants to connect with nature, fostering a love for the outdoors and contributing to their
physical and environmental literacy. By championing safe, inclusive, and enriching experiences,
you will help build a stronger, healthier, and more connected community.
Objectives of Outdoor Education Programming:
• Increase access to affordable, safe, quality outdoor education opportunities for people of
all ages and abilities.
• Enhance participants' connection to nature, fostering environmental awareness and
stewardship.
• Promote physical literacy and active play through outdoor exploration.
• Provide professional development opportunities in outdoor recreation for young
professionals.
This position requires an individual who is up for learning new skills, sharing knowledge,
passionate about play and playfulness, and a desire to listen and engage in meaningful
conversations.
What You'll Need:
• Education or Experience: You're in (or have finished) a college or university program
in Outdoor Recreation, Education, Environmental Studies, or a related field, with
relevant experience in outdoor program facilitation. (Applicants with equivalent training
and experience will also be considered.) Professional development opportunities may
also be made available throughout the summer.• Safety First: You hold a valid First Aid Certificate (minimum Emergency First Aid) and
CPR C from a recognized provider, along with a Vulnerable Sector Check and a Child
Abuse Registry Check. Successful candidates must provide proof of a clear vulnerable
persons check prior to start date.
• Skills to Share: You have demonstrated experience planning and leading inclusive
outdoor programs that encourage exploration, physical activity, and environmental
stewardship.
• Team Spirit: You're enthusiastic, organized, and motivated, with strong problem-
solving skills and adaptability. You're passionate about fostering connections to nature
and providing safe, developmentally appropriate outdoor experiences for people of all
ages and abilities. You are a team player with the ability to work collaboratively and
independently to ensure program success. You possess excellent communication and
interpersonal skills to engage participants.

What You'll Do:
• Team up with the Active Transportation Facilitator and other team members to co-host
events and initiatives that align with departmental priorities.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate outdoor education programs, ensuring they are inclusive
of participants of all ages and abilities.
• Facilitate activities that promote environmental awareness, outdoor skills, and physical
literacy through engaging and hands-on experiences.
• Supervise participants, prioritizing safety while fostering a spirit of exploration and active
participation.
• Support active play and learning by modeling positive behavior and creating a
welcoming environment.
• Adhere to health and safety guidelines, implementing risk management practices in
outdoor settings.
• Maintain and manage program equipment, ensuring proper use and reporting
maintenance needs.
• Assist with department-wide initiatives, providing support for events, community
engagement, and program delivery as needed.
• Build relationships with participants, families, and the community to encourage
engagement and highlight the value of outdoor education and recreation.
Work Status: Seasonal, Full-Time (non-unionized) Position
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm, with some weekend and evening shifts as
required.
Work Location: Town of Kentville Parks and Recreation facilities and outdoor spaces.
Salary Range: $18.00 per hour
Employment Duration: May to September 2025 (35 hours per week)
