Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.


The Clinical Manager of the Horizon Program is currently seeking a Full-Time Occupational Therapy Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA). Under the supervision of the Clinical Manager, and the direction of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OT) and/or Physiotherapist (PT), the OTA/PTA will provide support to the multidisciplinary clinical team in the delivery of patient care and collaborate in the development of the service and maintenance of the standards of practice of the profession.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:



Participates in the planning and provision of individualized Occupational Therapist (OT) and Physical Therapist (PT) programs, as well as contributing to the revision/progression of the therapy programs. Motivates and encourages patients to meet intervention goals established by the patient and therapist. Adapts communication to meet the individual needs of a patient. Provides patient/family education (within scope) and reinforces patient/family education provided by the therapist during assigned activities. Observes, monitors, and reports the patients' responses, performance and progress toward expected outcomes (verbally and/or written). Informs OT and /or PT promptly of significant changes in the patients' functional status; informs OT, PT and/or health care team members promptly of significant changes in the patients' health status Reviews the patient's health record for information prior to providing treatment and communicates with the health care team as appropriate. Maintains documentation in accordance with OT and PT policies and procedures and corporate standards. Attends rounds, meetings, and patient conferences as directed by therapist(s) to both give and receive verbal communication regarding patient status. Performs non-patient care activities to assist OT and PT service delivery (e.g., equipment inventory and maintenance).

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:



Combined OTA/PTA certificate course from an accredited college or equivalent education. Experience in geriatric setting and population preferred. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification an asset. Demonstrated knowledge of functional cognition and dementia scales. Experience in seating and positioning, use of mobility aids, skin protection principles. Demonstrated knowledge assessment principles pertaining to activities of daily living (ADL's) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL's). Demonstrated knowledge of transfer and ambulation techniques and strategies. Proficient with computers, MS Word, internet searches, data entry and patient information systems. Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills Proven written and verbal communication skills Proven ability to adapt readily to change Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation), and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills
