Outma Sqilx'w Cultural School is seeking a full-time temporary bus driver for a period of 3 to 6 months. Under the supervision of the OSCS Principal and Vice Principal, this important position focuses on providing safe transportation for students and school staff. This includes travelling both to and from school in a safe and punctual manner with additional trips such as school outings or field trips.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Job Responsibilities:
Safely drive multi-passenger bus to and from school, following prescribed routes/times daily during the school year as well as driving to school activities and field trips.
Comply with traffic regulations to operate the bus in a safe and courteous manner.
Adhere to and enforce safety rules as students are boarding and exiting bus, and as they cross streets near bus stops.
Always ensure students' safety and engage with students in friendly, positive, professional manner while promoting a healthy environment for the children.
On call until afternoon run- go home if there are not daily activities
Maintain knowledge of basic first-aid procedures, perform minor first-aid and complete forms for school records while also ensuring the first aid kit is adequately stocked and maintained.
Report delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations, to the school Principal and/or Vice Principal, using cell phone or mobile two-way radio
Maintenance Duties:
Perform pre and post trip inspections as required by government regulations.
Maintain all necessary paperwork, logs, and records.
Report and bus malfunctions or needs for repair to Principal.
Check fuel and oil gages and maintain refueling schedule.
Install chains regarding weather conditions to ensure the safety of students and bus.
External Responsibilities:
Positive role model and positive/healthy choices always.
Assists with supervision during field trips and school outings while representing OSCS offsite.
Qualifications/Certifications/Requirements/Skills and Levels:
Basic First aid
Class 2 Drivers License
Capable of changing tires and installing chains under adverse conditions.
Equipment Maintenance
Demonstrate sound judgment required for making driving decisions under varying road conditions and dealing with student behavior.
Selective attention-ability to concentrate on tasks over a period without being distracted with quick reaction time
Assets:
Knowledge of Okanagan Language and Culture
Class 2 with air brakes endorsement
Working Conditions:
Remaining seated in the driver's compartment for extended periods with limited ability to move or stretch.
Frequent turning of a large steering wheel, use of pedals, and operating controls like the door and stop arm.
Working in a vehicle that can be very hot in summer and cold in winter, with direct exposure to sun, rain, and snow.
Constant exposure to engine noise, road sounds, student chatter, and the vibration from the moving vehicle.
Climbing up and down the high steps to enter and exit the bus repeatedly throughout the day.
Preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal applicants as per section 21 of the Human Rights Code.
