Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic student to work in the Lumentum Optical Systems R&D group to contribute to the development of our wavelength selective switch (WSS) products. WSS product development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, LCOS, MEMS, hermetics, micro-optics assembly and electronics. WSS is a cutting-edge technology that is central to Lumentum?s Agile Optical Network product strategy and it is these products which handle a significant portion of the world?s voice and internet traffic.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and to learn about the product development process at Lumentum. In this position, students will contribute to the development of optical design and performance analysis tools. These initiatives will lead to improved design efficiency and increased optical analysis capabilities. Students will work with the Optical Design team and collaborate with other functional teams as required, throughout their work terms.

The Opportunity...
8 month term (preferred): September 2023 - April 2024
4 month term: September 2023 - December 2023

Responsibilities
The Optical Systems Development Intern?s responsibilities would include but not be limited to the following:

  • Become familiar with Lumentum optical design software tools and manufacturing data management systems as required.
  • Develop models and software/programs specific to WSS optical performance analysis and component specification.
  • Validate and release models and codes, including documentation.
  • Provide regular progress reports summarizing results and findings.
  • If the intern is working on-site, some in-lab optical testing would be performed.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates will be enrolled in a Bachelor?s or Master?s degree program in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, or a related major. Students must be returning to school following the internship.


Desired Qualifications
  • Strong communications, initiative, and teamwork
  • Understanding of optical systems and optics principles including aberrations, polarization, Gaussian beam propagation, fiber coupling and diffraction.
  • Strong software development skills and programming experience.
  • Experience with Matlab, Python, and/or Zemax OpticStudio considered an asset.
