Ophthalmic Technician

Job Description

Ophthalmic technician/assistant will perform tasks and technical exams to support the ophthalmologist, including pre-appointment testing, assist with administering medications and in-office procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities



Verify the information in the file by interviewing the patient, gathering and recording medical history, and confirming the purpose of the visit.

Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary tests.

Takes ocular measurements-anatomical and functional.

Secures patient information and maintains patient confidentiality by completing and safeguarding medical records.

Counsels patients by transmitting physician's orders and providing eye care information to the patient under the physician's direction.

Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following CPSA, AMA, Alberta Health Services standards and general office standards and procedures.

Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance and cleaning, making office manager aware when repairs need to be made.

Participates in training required for the proper use of sterilization equipment and adheres to guidelines regarding disinfection and sterilization of instruments-always.

Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications.

Serves and protects the ophthalmology practise by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, provincial, and local requirements.

Cleaning Responsibilities



These shared responsibilities include daily weekly, and yearly cleaning as marked in each lane to comply with CPSA IPAC requirements. This includes but is not limited to:

Daily wipe/dust instrument tables, ophthalmic equipment, and computers.

Clean patient touch areas during day-door handles, door frames, counters, objects in exam rooms, and other high-touch patient items.

Damp wipe and sanitize all horizontal surfaces in all rooms (including but not limited to cabinet tops, desktops, switch plates, grey chairs, patient chairs, computers, and telephones).

Disinfect all sinks once daily with germicidal disinfectant.

Vacuum all areas, moving chairs when necessary and behind the front reception area.

Disinfecting work areas at the end of the day and shared work areas before and after each use.

Dry mop and wet mop all non-carpeted floors with germicidal disinfectant solution.

Remove trash and replace liners regularly.

Knowledge and Skills



Ability to independently, or as part of the team, assess, plan and adjust urgent or routine work priorities to meet required objectives in consideration of timelines.

Performs pre-operational checks daily, reports maintenance and repair issues immediately, and performs light-duty maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment.

Relay information in an accurate, clear, concise and courteous manner (very good bedside mannerisms).

Ability to work with precision instruments, including knowledge of infection control, sterilization and safe work procedures.

Technician requires superior examination skills, looking for small changes and details during exams and testing, plus a high level of attention to detail in their work.

Identifies problems, explores options and implements appropriate solutions.

Develops and maintains positive work relationships with co-workers, physicians, and patients.

Flexibility, organization, and superior time management capabilities.

Excellent attention to detail in all communications and entries, plus understanding difficulties inaccurate entries may cause.

Trustworthy with high ethical standards, a deep understanding of confidentiality, and a high level of personal integrity.
