The opportunity Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking temporary Heavy Equipment Operators & Haul Truck Drivers to join their highly skilled team to work on a Fly-in/Fly-out basis of 2 Weeks On/Off with a standard 12 hours/day schedule, to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. The main pick-up points are St. John\xe2\x80\x99s, Gander, Deer Lake and Happy Valley-Goose Bay in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC. Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for providing support to mine and processing operations in an active open pit iron ore mine. Successful candidates should be able to operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to: Excavators, Dozers, Graders, Loaders and Haul Trucks. Please note that these are four to six (4 \xe2\x80\x93 6) month contract positions from June to October 2023, with the possibility of extension or permanent employment thereafter. Expectations
Safely and efficiently operate equipment of various sizes
Follow direction of Supervisor for daily tasks and expectations for each specific project or jobsite
Identify and report hazards, near misses and incidents with the goal of supporting and developing TSMC\xe2\x80\x99s safety standards
Follow all company policies and OHS regulations
Report and contain spills harmful to the environment
Perform minor servicing and maintenance of equipment
Perform daily pre-and-post inspections with appropriate documentation in compliance with company policies
Fill out shift documentation clearly and accurately for reporting purposes
Assist in training less-experienced employees on the proper operations, servicing, and repair of equipment to further their abilities
Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability and performs general laboring duties when necessary or other duties as assigned
Duties & Responsibilities
Operate loaders to feed/takeaway ore from plant operations and load product into train cars and perform other tasks as required
Operate excavators to efficiently load ore/waste into haul trucks, support stockpile management, and other construction activities as required
Operate graders to maintain haul roads
Operate dozers to efficiently maintain dumps, provide pit support, stockpile management, and perform other tasks as required
Operate rigid frame haul trucks to transport ore and waste material to various locations
Other duties and tasks as required
In order to fulfill these responsibilities, you will be expected to manage and handle the following working conditions; A fast-paced environment, handling heavy loads, physically demanding, attention to detail, hand-eye co-ordination, combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling. Experience & Qualifications
Valid drivers license
Minimum 3 years\' experience in an open pit mining environment operating the following heavy equipment:
Excavator: Experience operating PC 1250, Hitachi 1200, JD 870, JD 470 or Cat 349
Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures outlined in Health and Safety Guidelines
Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations and construction sites
Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required
It would be desirable to have the following driver license classes to assist with other duties at mine site. Class 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 9 along with air brake endorsement. Other training such as TDG, Overhead Powerlines will be an asset.
Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening, physical, and criminal background check
Technical Competencies & Skills
Must be able to work 12 hour day and night shifts for 14 to 21 days at a time
Must be able to work in a remote environment in harsh conditions
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions and to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in English. Bilingualism is considered an asset.
Physically fit to operate listed equipment and perform some physical labour
Excellent safety and attendance record
Willingness to learn
Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions
Must be willing to operate multiple pieces of equipment and perform a variety of tasks as required
Must have a positive attitude, work well with others, and treat all employees with respect
