Forest Protection Limited (FPL) invites applications for the OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR position. The OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR reports directly to the Senior Director of Operations and works within the Field Operations Department. The OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR is responsible for the execution of field projects and any implied tasks for their successful completion. They play a key role in the scheduling and supervision of Operations Support staff, ensuring safety in all aspects of their work, maintaining and managing equipment and inventory, and acting as an FPL aerial base and pit manager when required. The OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR is a fast paced and exciting role with a large variety of duties; from scheduling and monitoring flights in the completion of field work, to on the ground operations collecting samples or managing woodlands operations. This position will be cross trained in a large variety of different tasks that support all of FPL operations; such as fire loading, working in the operations centre, or working in the FPL lab.
JOB BESCRIPTION
Operations:
Oversee the execution of all projects as assigned:
+ Report key performance metrics to the Senior Director of Operations.
+ Monitor and measure performance of assigned projects.
+ Source equipment and product inventory.
+ Understand and apply government regulations. (Canadian Aviation Regulations, Pesticide Application Regulations, Transportation Dangerous Goods, etc.)
+ Execute the project in accordance with a budget and compile, prepare, distribute and file reports, records, correspondence, invoices, flight tickets, receipts, expense accounts, etc. as required.
+ Execution of projects would involve travel to various locations outside of the local area. Manage Aerial Bases:
Scheduling and deploying appropriate aircraft and aircrew to assignments.
Monitoring flight and duty times and rescheduling or restricting operations as required or needed.
Maintaining current aircraft and personnel information for relay to authorities in emergency situations.
Maintain aviation operations files and records as they relate to the period of base management.
Closely monitor weather conditions for the decision to launch planes for aerial work.
Use various computer software and technologies to monitor assets (aircraft, vehicles, radios, etc.)
Load aircraft with product.
Fly in support aircraft as needed to support operations and improve decision making.
Monitor and maintain records on the consumption of product usage (pesticide, or other).
Setup and establish aerial bases, mobile or otherwise.
+ Setup, stock, and maintain the Deployed Operations Centre.
+ Setup, test, calibrate, and contain aircraft loading pits. Management and control of the Field Operations Department inventory.
+ Maintain all Field Operations Department equipment in accordance with FPL SOPs.
+ Calibrate equipment as applicable. Safety
+ Adhere to all safe work practices, champion safe work activities and habits.
+ Develop and deliver training to direct reports.
+ Develop and deliver safety and emergency response training to the department as assigned. Other Tasks
Support to research initiatives through sample collection (field work) or sample processing in the FPL lab.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
+ Post Secondary Education is required.
- Extra consideration is given to those with a BSc Forestry, BSc Forestry Engineering, and B.Eng. Experience
+ 3-5 years of supervisory or management experience is preferred.
+ Experience working in an aviation environment as a pilot, operations coordinator, base manager, or aircraft loader an asset.
+ 1-2 years project management experience is preferred. Demonstratable knowledge of:
+ Project Management Principles
+ Personnel management
+ Familiar with basic office software suite, excel and word or equivalent. Desirable traits and knowledge.
+ Wildland Fire Fighting an asset
