Major Responsibilities:
  • Provides work direction to and works with a crew of employees for the effective delivery of construction, maintenance and operation services in a wastewater collection system and construction services at plant and divisional facilities, their related infrastructure and associated appurtenances in a manner consistent with the City\'s legislative obligation and to the applicable quality standard(s)
  • Assess, respond to and coordinate spill response activities in waterways
  • Assigns work activities. Provides work related and on-the-job training to staff
  • Recommends additional training for staff to supervisor
  • Performs skilled and semi-skilled work, not requiring the services of a licensed tradesperson, relating to Plant and Divisional Facilities, Trunk Systems and their related infrastructure and associated appurtenances as a working member of the crew or on their own
  • Ensures all assigned staff perform work activities in compliance with all applicable Health and Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures.
  • Investigates and prepares detailed reports, cost estimates and sketches relating to assigned work.
  • Maintains accurate daily records related to the delivery of services in work order files and crew accomplishments, utilizing field sheets or electronic devices.
  • Monitors assigned staff. Records attendance and overtime.
  • Monitors and provides feedback to supervisor regarding contractors and suppliers.
  • Investigates complaints and recommends or implements appropriate solutions.
  • Requisitions materials and equipment and ensures appropriate inventory control is maintained.
  • Designated as \xe2\x80\x9csupervisor\xe2\x80\x9d as defined by the O.H.S.A, acts as the City contact on site and is deemed to be the competent individual as defined by the O.H.S.A. as it relates to the job functions.
  • May be required to work shift work and extended shift work as per the Collective Agreement.
  • Performs other duties at this wage grade level or lower such as labouring type duties, maintenance and cleaning activities when not operating assigned vehicle or equipment.
  • Completes reports (e.g., Driver\'s Collision/Incident Report) related to assigned duties and Responsibilities.
  • Performs work in a safe, efficient and courteous manner
Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class \xe2\x80\x9cD\xe2\x80\x9d Driver\'s License with \xe2\x80\x9cZ\xe2\x80\x9d endorsement and must have or shall be required to obtain required City permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment(s).
  • Must possess and be able to maintain Ministry of Environment Waste Water Collection Class 1 Operator\'s License or must possess and be able to maintain Ministry of Environment Wastewater Collection Class 1 OIT (Operator in Training) certificate.
  • Considerable experience with the equipment, tools, materials and methods for construction, repair, rehabilitation and maintenance of a wastewater collection system, plant and divisional facilities, the related infrastructure and associated appurtenances.
  • Considerable experience in the application of OHSA act for construction and industrial regulatory requirements including confined space entry.
  • Experience providing work direction.
You must also have:
  • Ability to plan, coordinate and schedule activities.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems and conflicting situations and determine required course of action.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Considerable experience with the equipment, tools, materials and methods for the operational and logistical response to various emergencies including: disinfection, broken sewers, water mains and process lines, plant upsets, flooding, snow removal, graffiti removal, collapsed chambers and debris removal.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, sketches and material schedules.
  • Ability to report to various work locations.
  • Knowledge of and experience applying the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of the duties and responsibilities.
  • May be required to do shift work in accordance with Collective Agreement.
  • Ability to work overtime and call-ins as required in accordance with Collective Agreement.
  • Ability to orient new staff on assigned vehicles/equipment and provide work related and on-the-job training.
  • Ability to use various technical devices related to the position for work coordination and communication.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to communicate in relation to the job duties, both orally and in writing.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties. (Accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under the City\'s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement.)
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces with exposure to sewage and water treatment plant environments.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with Ontario Statutes, including Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Notes:
  • Fully licensed WWC Class 1 applicants will be considered before applicants who possess a WWC OIT when placing successful candidates into vacancies.
  • Successful applicants who hold WWC OIT certificate, must obtain their WWC Class 1 License within eighteen (18) months of starting the OSW position.
  • Toronto Water division will provide successful WWC OIT candidates with 1800 hours of relevant wastewater collection experience within eighteen (18) months of starting the OSW position.
