Role Overview

We are hiring an Online English Tutor (Academic Mentor) to deliver high-impact, one-on-one English support in a fully remote setting. You will help students strengthen skills in reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and communication, while providing the structure, encouragement, and mentorship that turns improvement into long-term confidence.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver live, online English tutoring sessions (primarily 1:1, with potential small-group support as needed). Conduct a diagnostic-style check-in/assessment early on to identify strengths, gaps, and goals. Create and follow a customized learning plan aligned with the student's grade level, needs, and learning style. Teach core English skills, including (as applicable): Reading comprehension & annotation strategies Paragraph/essay structure, clarity, and style Grammar and mechanics Literary analysis (theme, tone, symbolism, evidence-based responses) Provide regular progress updates, measurable goal-setting, and constructive feedback to track improvement. Maintain a supportive, motivating online classroom environment that builds confidence and consistency. Use collaborative online tools effectively to keep sessions engaging and organized.

Who You'll Tutor

Students may include:

K-12 learners needing support with coursework, writing, and reading skills High school students focused on grade improvement, writing development, and literary analysis Post-secondary students who need help with academic writing and English-based coursework (where applicable)

Required Qualifications

Strong command of English and the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently Minimum Bachelor's degree (or in progress with strong experience), ideally related to English, Education, Literature, or a closely related field Experience tutoring/teaching English (formal or informal), with confidence supporting writing and reading skills Comfortable teaching in a fully online environment (Zoom-style sessions, shared docs/whiteboards, etc.) Gateway Academy Reliable internet connection, professional communication, and strong punctuality

Preferred Assets (Nice to Have)

Experience with BC curriculum, Canadian school expectations, or standardized writing rubrics Classroom teaching experience (BC certification is an asset) Experience supporting students with learning differences (ADHD, anxiety, executive functioning needs)
