will provide a developmentally rich hockey and ringette activity program for students. Depending on availability, hours will be 12-14 hours per week.

This is a
physically demanding role

participate and demonstrate various sporting activities
. These assistants should have:
A
strong background
working with children through
sport, personal fitness
, and
in particular ice hockey and/or ringette
.
Technical Hockey/Ringette skills:
Proficient in demonstrating and assisting students with various skating techniques, ability to teach and demonstrate basic hockey/ringette skills, knowledge of common hockey drills and the ability to set them up and explain them clearly to students.
Instructional Skills:
Ability to effectively demonstrate technical skills in a clear and understandable manner, provide individual attention to students who need extra help with specific skills, and break down complex skills into simple, manageable steps that are easy for students to follow.
Communication Skills:
Provide clear, concise, and age-appropriate instructions to students, use positive reinforcement to encourage and motivate students, helping to build their confidence, and listen to students' questions and respond appropriately. Communicate patiently and with empathy to students.
Safety:
Understand and enforce safety rules and protocols on the ice and during drills. Basic first aid would be considered an asset.
Collaboration and Organization:
Work closely with the lead coach and other staff to understand practice objectives and how best to assist. Assist in setting up and organizing drills and practice sessions efficiently and help manage the flow of practice.
Behavior Management:
Assist in maintaining discipline and order during practice sessions, ensuring students stay focused and engaged.
Any additional coaching, skating or relevant certifications would be considered an asset.
The On-Ice assistant will have a crucial role in supporting children as they explore and develop their hockey and ringette skills. Individuals will work under the direction of the teacher (program coordinator) to implement instruction in an on-ice "center approach" to skill development. Classes will range from approximately 20-30 students at a time with a target of 8:1 on ice support. Hours will be dependent on the candidates' availability to the various cohorts we are running. Successful candidates must be able to transport themselves to and from rinks as needed.
