Job Description

Victim Services of York Region is a non-profit charitable agency that works in partnership with York Regional Police and the OPP (Aurora Detachment) to provide 24-hour emotional support and practical assistance to persons victimized by crime or tragic circumstance. Victim Services of York Region is seeking a Crisis Intervention Counsellor to assist persons victimized by crime and tragic circumstance.

This on-call position requires being available, from home, Monday-Thursday overnights between 9:00 pm and 7:00 am, and Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holiday overnights between 7:00 pm and 8:00 am.



This is an ongoing three-week rotating shift with varying weekly hours shared between three on call-overnight staff members to provide immediate response to telephone calls to our crisis line, as well as travel out at night to provide an on scene crisis response. This position pays a minimum of 3 hours for each night scheduled.



The successful candidate may choose to also pick up additional daytime relief shifts on weekends, statutory holidays, and occasionally on weekdays.



Responsibilities:

Office Administration:



Deliver VSY service in York Region in accordance with our mandate, procedures and guidelines

Maintain strict client confidentiality, as per VSY policy and procedure guidelines, including any issues with Victims/ Witnesses, VSY Volunteers, Board Members, and Staff

Work cooperatively in a team environment with all VSY Staff, Police and Fire Services, Volunteers, Community Representatives, as well as the Executive Director and Board of Directors for VSY

Maintain appropriate record-keeping/documentation and client files, statistical and outcome measurement tools as required by VSY policies and procedures

In consultation with the Executive Director, ensure the current service delivery of VSY, based on local needs and/or resources, is being met

Maintain open communication with the Executive Director concerning all operations and risk management issues related to the VSY organization.

Client Service Delivery:



Maintain a time sensitive delivery response for telephone follow up, in order to meet the individual needs of victims

Responsible for monitoring our 24-hour crisis response line when on shift, assessing client needs and dispatching volunteers as needed

Provide support, advocacy, referrals and connections to community resources

Attendance on scene if volunteers are unavailable to fulfill back up role

Responsible for volunteer(s)' direct service needs while on shift

Training & Outreach:



Liaise with local programs, police and other social service agencies, as required, to promote the VSY program, exchange information, as well as establish and maintain a cooperative alliance

Educate Police Officers and Fire Service personnel in the appropriate use of the VSY program

Participate in regional disaster training opportunities

Qualifications

:

At a minimum, the successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Social Work (BSW), or an Honours Bachelor of Mental Health & Addictions (BMHA)

A Master's degree of Social Work (MSW) with Clinical experience is preferred

Ability to work evenings into overnight as scheduled, and have reliable transportation to travel throughout York Region

The successful candidate must have a valid G driver's license and be able to travel anywhere in York Region within 60 minutes of receiving a call

Experience with responding to persons victimized by crime or tragic circumstance including: domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, traffic and fire fatalities, suicide, sudden death, and homicide

Sound, trauma informed, knowledge of crisis intervention and victim issues; ability to keep knowledge up to date on available services for clients

Ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds

Able to function well in high stress, fluid environments

Excellent interpersonal skills

Excellent active listening skills and the ability to communicate in a clear and straightforward manner

Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset

Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office

Strong organizational abilities

Sound, trauma informed, knowledge of crisis intervention and victim issues; ability to keep knowledge up to date on available services for clients

A preliminary requirement will be a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check) report

An annual criminal records check (Police Check) will be required of the successful candidate
