What You Will Do: Providence Health Care\'s Occupational Therapy department is now accepting applications for a brand-new leadership opportunity at our long-term care sites. This Occupational Therapy Supervisor position for Seniors Care provides fantastic opportunities for career growth and development while supporting a tight-knit and collaborative health care team embedded within a long-term care home, allowing for deep connections to be made with both colleagues and residents. Our OTs are key members of our Allied Health team, working closely with other Allied disciplines like Physiotherapy and Speech Language Pathology as well as other members of our care teams to tackle the rewarding variety of treatment needs of the patient populations we serve.   • Coordinate Day-to-Day Operations: Manage daily operations of the Occupational Therapy team, including coordinating work assignments, monitoring patient/resident flow, and adjusting staff assignments as needed.

  • Provide Clinical Support and Supervision: Act as a clinical resource, coach, and mentor for staff and students, and provide direct patient/resident assessment and treatment as required. Supervise up to 24 FTEs, including Occupational Therapists and non-paramedical staff.

  • Facilitate Learning and Development: Identify learning needs, develop educational and orientation materials, and present to staff. Promote research and quality improvement initiatives within the department.

  • Communicate and Collaborate: Ensure the Professional Practice Leader (PPL) and program/service leadership are informed of issues or concerns, and support the interdisciplinary team in achieving program/service, patient, and resident goals.
Qualifications / Skills and Education:
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Master\'s Degree in Occupational Therapy plus four (4) years broad experience in a health care setting including at least two (2) years in designated program/service areas and previous supervisory and administrative experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia. Eligible for membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists.

Your Day to Day:
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of occupational therapy staff within the designated program/service(s) by coordinating work assignments. Monitors patient/resident acuity and flow within the designated program/service(s) and ensures staffing levels are appropriate. Assists staff in prioritizing workload. Adjusts assignments as changes in acuity and staffing require and provides clinical support to staff as needed.
  • Oversees the day-to-day supervision of designated staff by providing advice/guidance and facilitating resolution to workplace issues. Gathers information on staffing changes or requests for coverage, and in conjunction with PPL or designate, allocates staff based upon skill set and program or service needs, in accordance with applicable collective agreements. Facilitates schedule adjustments by approving vacation, education and leaves of absence as required.
  • Acts as a clinical resource to staff, students, and other members of the interdisciplinary team, by demonstrating procedures, answering questions related to clinical practice issues, and troubleshooting concerns. Advises and works with OT leaders/educators/specialists and/or program staff and leadership to resolve issues/concerns. Acts as a positive role model for staff and refers issues to PPL as required.
  • Provides input into the development, evaluation, and delivery of orientation, in conjunction with OT leaders/educators and other members of the health care team. Provides orientation to new employees and participates in program/service orientation activities as required. Identifies learning needs of staff and communicates to PPL and OT leaders/educators/specialists. Promotes educational opportunities to staff and encourages continuing education. Presents in-service educational sessions for staff as required.
  • Performs direct patient/resident care using recognized techniques and practices as assigned/required. Contributes to an inter-disciplinary approach to patient/resident care and program related issues by attending rounds and team conferences to exchange information in patient/resident issues related to patient/resident care and discharge planning. Provides student supervision as required.
  • Develops and reviews policies, procedures, practice standards, and reference materials for the applicable site in collaboration with OT leaders/educators/specialists and program service leadership.
  • Provides input to the PPL regarding Performance Planning and Coaching. Acts as clinical resource to staff in the Performance Planning and Coaching process.
  • Assists with Human Resource Planning by identifying vacancies to PPL and participating in the recruitment and selection of staff as needed.
  • Attends and/or leads meetings, in-services, and corporate initiatives by methods such as presenting relevant materials/topics to remain informed of departmental/practice activities and to contribute to organizational initiatives.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary care team members regarding quality improvement (QI) initiatives, by developing QI projects, implementing processes and procedures upon authorization, and evaluating results. Ensures staff are aware of changes and updates once established.
  • Assists the staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team in the identification of researchable clinical patient/resident care management problems and advises Research, Education and Practice Coordinator and PPL.
  • Participates in research initiatives and projects related to patient/resident care and/or discipline practices as requested, disseminates findings, and assists in applying and implementing research findings into practice.
  • Provides input and recommendations to the PPL and/or program/service leadership regarding equipment, supplies, workspace, and staffing requirements and advises of concerns and problems and provides suggestions to resolve problems.
  • Takes leadership role in conjunction with PPL at professional practice council meetings and advises PPL of concerns or issues within designated program/service(s).
  • Maintains a variety of records such as workload statistics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
