Job Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and reliable Rehabilitation Assistant to provide one-on-one support for an individual recovering from a spinal cord injury in their private home. In this vital role, you will work directly with the individual and their primary therapists (Occupational and Physical) to implement a personalized therapy plan. Your primary goal will be to provide hands-on assistance, encouragement, and support, helping them achieve greater independence, strength, and quality of life. This is a unique opportunity to make a profound and direct impact on someone's rehabilitation journey.
Responsibilities
Work one-on-one with the individual to execute the daily exercise and therapy routines prescribed by their Occupational and Physical Therapists.
Assist with therapeutic activities and exercises designed to improve mobility, strength, balance, and function.
Support the individual in practicing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as dressing, personal care, and meal preparation, to foster independence.
Provide consistent motivation and encouragement, creating a positive and supportive atmosphere for recovery.
Ensure the individual's safety during all activities, including proper positioning, safe transfers (e.g., to/from wheelchair), and use of adaptive equipment.
Maintain a simple, clear log of daily activities, noting progress, challenges, and any relevant observations to share with the family and therapy team.
Communicate effectively with the individual's primary therapists to report on progress and ensure the care plan is being followed correctly.
Qualifications
A deeply compassionate, patient, and encouraging demeanor is essential for this role.
Direct, hands-on experience working with individuals recovering from spinal cord injuries, strokes, or other significant neurological conditions is strongly preferred.
Background as a Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA), Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Kinesiologist, or Personal Support Worker (PSW) with a focus on rehabilitation is highly desirable.
Strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and body mechanics, particularly as they relate to neurological recovery and exercise.
Proven ability to perform safe patient handling and transfer techniques.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build a trusting and professional relationship.
Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision. Is Laurie not home yet I'm here
