Position Summary

:


The Registered Occupational Therapist operates under the philosophy of Occupational Therapy, delivering services in a client-centered framework. The therapist applies science knowledge and occupational therapy skills to work with individuals to promote health by maintaining, restoring or enhancing daily performance in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure. The Occupational Therapist works closely with the patient, family and other members of an interdisciplinary team to provide efficient and effective individualized patient care.


Responsibilities:



Patient Care/Assessment



Completes a comprehensive assessment of patient's ability to perform ADL and IADL functional components. Evaluates physical and functional status including muscle groups, motor function, upper extremity function, ADL's, coordination and neurological status. Designs and revises plan of care and goals, outlining clinical recommendations and communicating changes or concerns to the health team members, patient, and/or family. Work with the patient and health team to plan, co-ordinate, implement and evaluate initiatives for patient care and/ or safe discharge from hospital. Adapt communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers and others within our health care community.

Support



Provide ongoing direction and supervision to Therapy Assistant staff and or mentorship for Occupational Therapy students. Observes, evaluates and documents objective data pertaining to patient progress to goals set. Ensure that all documentation is complete and in adherence to OT College charting guidelines. Record patient and non-patient workload statistics. Abide by all SMGH policies and procedures, (i.e., Occupational Health & Safety Act, Public Hospitals Act,) position obligations, and perform work duties in accordance with SMGH's Code of Conduct. Participate in practice council, unit council, and other internal and external committee meetings where Occupational Therapy clinical input may be valued. Fulfill any formal or informal teaching activities related to program goals and objectives. Demonstrate values and a commitment to foster a healthy, supportive work environment dedicated to delivering a high-quality care experience through compassion, innovation and respect. Effectively apply organizational and time management skills to prioritize workload, to problem solve, and to adapt to frequent interruptions and change. Attendance at team rounds. Assists with equipment inventories. Allocates equipment and resources as required by the patient. Provides recommendations for equipment purchases and rentals. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements:



Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Program. Registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO). Active Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certificate or ability to obtain within 3 months and maintain Membership with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists or Ontario society of Occupational Therapists. Recognized BCLS Certification. Three (3) to five (5) years working in an acute care hospital. Knowledge of Disability and Occupational Function issues in both adult and older adult population. Knowledge of the functional impact for individuals with a diagnosis of acute, chronic and palliative conditions. Ability to apply current knowledge, theory, evidence and sound clinical judgment in patient management. Employee must demonstrate basic computer skills including the use of: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Proficient in utilizing computer applications to document, input and extract data accurately, receive and send emails, as well as in making calendar appointments. Commitment to maintaining and promoting healthy working relationships Ability to apply best practice modalities for assessment and treatment within occupational therapy and professional scope of practice

Preferred Requirements:



Basic splinting skills Three (3) to five (5) years of acute care hospital experience Knowledge of the community and resources available. Ability to work with diverse patients and staff populations Familiarity with electronic documentation system
